From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Of all bestselling authors, Koontz may be the most underestimated by the literary establishment. Book after book, year after year, this author climbs to the top of the charts. Why? His readers know: because he is a master storyteller and a daring writer, and because, in his novels, he gives readers bright hope in a dark world. His new book is an examplar of his extraordinary work. Suspense is difficult to sustain; suspense that's buoyed steadily by humor, even as it deals with the most desperate of circumstances, is nearly impossible—yet Koontz manages it here. As in last year's brilliant Odd Thomas, Koontz writes again in the first person, employing a cleaner, more instantly accessible line than in some of his other work (e.g., this year's The Taking). His narrator is Jimmy Tock, a pastry chef in a Colorado resort town. On the day he was born, Jimmy's dying grandfather predicted five future dates that would be terrible for Jimmy; he might have mentioned, but didn't, the birth day itself, which sees a mass slaying by a bitter, deranged circus clown in the hospital where Jimmy is born. The bulk of the narrative concerns the first terrible day, about 20 years later, when the vengeful son of that clown takes Jimmy and a lovely young woman, Lorrie Hicks, hostage in the local library, with an eye toward destroying the town; Jimmy and the woman live to marry, but will they and their family survive the four subsequent terrible days? Like most of Koontz's novels, this one pits good versus evil and carries a persuasive spiritual message, about the power of love and family and the miracle of existence. As such it deals with serious, perennial themes, yet with its steady drizzle of jokes and witty repartee, it does so with a lightness of touch that few other authors can match. Koontz is a true original and this novel, one of his most unusual yet, will leave readers aglow and be a major bestseller. If the literary establishment would only catch on to him, it might be an award-winner too.

From AudioFile

Dean Koontz is one of those rare authors who can convincingly write a novel about a family of murderous clowns and how they terrorize nocturnal baker Jimmy Tock and his family. Furthermore, Koontz does so with an astounding sense of optimism. Like most Koontz novels, LIFE EXPECTANCY is well written, scary, and, at the same time, funny. It takes a talented reader to successfully perform a book like this, and actor John Bedford Lloyd does so marvelously. It would be easy for a reader to overemphasize the story's gruesomeness or to succumb to a singsong tone, yet Lloyd never falls into that trap. While Lloyd's portrayal of Jimmy Tock is terrific, it is the personalities he gives to the rest of the Tock family, as well as the clowns and other evil circus performers, that make the reading superb and the listening so memorable. 4.0étoiles sur 5 My 100-word book review, Mars 24 2007
Life Expectancy is a curiously riveting and surreal thriller by Dean Koontz, featuring an eccentric baker who must come to terms with a prophecy made by his dying grandfather. There are suspenseful scenes that left me sitting on the edge of my chair, other passages that got me laughing out loud. Koontz's mix of gentle humour and thrills is not for everyone and does not hit the spot every time, but works well here. Like preparing a difficult soufflé (cooking metaphors abound in this novel), Koontz manages to make this book both funny and exciting, seldom a very easy task.

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This novel is unusual in its focus and approach, quite a departure from the previous novels I read by the author [The Taking, The Watchers]. It begins with two haunting themes simultaneously presented: birth and death ... both are so creatively intertwined that to provide too much detail would possibly ruin the pleasure of the reading experience. The impact, scope and magnitude of this book is enormous. It leaves the reader anticipating and wanting more ...

Essentially, the main character, Jimmy Tock was born in the hospital at exactly the same time that another mother was undergoing labor but sadly, complications occured and the other mother died in childbirth. Both fathers were pacing in the waiting room ... anxious to learn the outcome for their hopes and dreams to start a family. One father went beserk after learning of the death of his wife ... he went on a murderous rampage in the obstetrics ward. He was literally a clown in the circus and his wife had been an aerialist, the daughter of one of the most famous trapeze artists. During these fateful events, the grandfather of Jimmy Tock was dying. Shortly before his demise, he unexpectedly recovered concsiousness ... just long enough to make five predictions about Jimmy's future, complete with dates and forewarnings. These haunting predictions become the cliff-hanger that keeps the reader flipping page after page as fast as possible ... wanting to know what happens next. The artistic merits of this book surpass expectations ...

The book exaggerates emotions and events in what seems like a schizophrenic and surrealistic manner ... but this is exactly what captures the reader's attention. It keeps one glued on the spot, reading every page, feverishly desiring to know the nature of future developments. The grand finale, in the last several chapters, brings together mind-blowing secret events from the fateful day when two babies were born ... whose lives were inextricably tied together. It is amazing how all the predictions of Jimmy's grandfather transpired, leaving the reader quite dizzy and breathless but totally satisfied. The ultimate message is clear: hope and love can overcome the most bizarre and twisted threats that life can offer. This was proven in the lives of Jimmy Tock and his wife, Lorrie. After finishing this book, the question begs to be answered, can Dean Koontz top this one? One thing is certain ... I will *definitely* read the next book to find out! Erika Borsos (pepper flower)
