Book Description

Jan 1 1999
Drawing its inspiration from many spiritual traditions, including Celtic, Native American, East Indian, African, Medieval and Renaissance European, The Light and Shadow Tarot is an innovative collection of potent images and interpretations. The striking black-and-white images stress contrast and balance, resolution and completion, while remaining a strong and workable analogue to the traditional Tarot. Crafted with an enduring and haunting authority, this deck brings to light the shadow side of all of us, an essential part of the creative process that leads to growth, movement, and change.

Brian Williams is the creator of the popular PoMo (Postmodern) Tarot, published by Harper San Francisco.

The highly original block prints serve as both works of art and as an illuminating parallel to the accompanying text, which includes a detailed interpretation of each card.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like it, but there's better. Sep 6 2011

I had this deck a long time ago and it got stolen so I re bought it. i donno now it's meh. There's so many better decks. i'd even prefer thoth over this. I used to like the big cards but not anymore. I do like the images and the black & white is unique. I donno even a plain regular Waite is better. i really like Mystic Dreamer Tarot the images are beautiful. Even the necro deck is cooler. I donno, it got old. But it's not a bad deck, i'd just prefer others more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and vibrant July 4 2004
By A Customer
Format:Cards
Like most of the other reviewers, I have nothing but praise for this deck of cards. I ordered mine based on the positive reviews here, and since receiving them two days ago, I have hardly been able to put them down.

As a newcomer to Tarot I am still in the process of getting aquainted with the images and their meanings. Also as an amateur artist, I buy my decks based on the visual appeal and feel of the artwork and not so much for what esoteric system or culture they are created for. This deck even incorporates many cultures seamlessly as well as the artist's personal visions and ideas, but overall maintains much of the traditional Tarot symbolism so that the beginner will not have problems identifying the cards.

What speaks to me may not speak to everyone, but I find these bold linocuts to be alive and vibrant with joy and creativity quite unlike any other deck I've come across. The images are strong and dynamic enough that colour would only take away from them. The artwork alone is worth the price, I dare say even the four queens are reason enough to get this deck!

The accompanying booklet offers a short intro to each of the 78 cards, as well as an intersting bit about the life and work of the artist. As co-author Brian Williams writes in the preface, the ideas of Michael Goepferd are so rich, potent, and beautifully realized that they do not need any embellishment. Still I find the book a good little companion that enhances one's understanding and enjoyment of this particular deck. For longer in-depth discussion on Tarot, there are other and brilliant books out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Funk July 19 2003

Not strictly a review... this deck is completely lovely, and yes, it does have a weird smell to it, I'm assuming from the ink, but I spread the cards out on the floor and left them like that for a few hours and the smell was gone. Trust me, man, it's worth the effort.
