Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

However tempting it might be to dismiss any album whose opening lines are, "The sun is a lightbulb, the candle's a tree", this lot are well-worth persevering with, especially for anyone who worships at the shrine of the big electric guitar solo. Porcupine Tree's axeman, Steven Wilson, must have been born with more than the standard number of fingers on each hand in order to be able to do the things he does, but he also never forgets that a strong melody is more important than any rapid-fire cluster of randomly accessed notes. The band is also eclectic enough to include a delicate acoustic piano waltz, "How Is Your Life Today?", overlaid with gorgeously soaring vocal harmony and counterpoint; or to interrupt a CSNY-style ballad with a cosmic instrumental interlude featuring swirly harps and floaty. Ultimately, though, the greatest strength of Porcupine Tree is that they seem to exist in a bubble, doing exactly what they want to do with no concern for the musical mainstream. On Lightbulb Sun, they do it superbly. -- Johnny Black

Album Description

Special two disc (CD + DVD Audio) pressing of Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun album features a bonus DVD-Audio disc that contains a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album, the original stereo mix plus other fine bonus features. The CD features a new stereo mix of the album, which was originally released in 2000. Lightbulb Sun was Porcupine Tree's first foray into more commercial terrain and may have initially taken fans by surprise but has become a beloved entry in their impressive catalog.

First off I must say that I don't read the description of the product before buying, so, it was a big surprise to find out that it included a audio dvd with dts obtion sound, good purchase for the money, now, the music is just wonderfull if you like progressive rock, what I like the most is the interaction between the acoustic guitar and the real strong electric guitar solo, the softness of the voices harmony with a strong message. with the right equipment you will enjoy a real high teck product that I didn't have the chance to hear very often. It has also all kind of other obtion that I didn't really understand because I am not that much high teck. but I fully reccomand it. Hope you will enjoy it as much as me, I have heard only two project from the band , this one and fear of the blank planet and even though I love them both, this one because of the super sound, I would reccomand this one if you have only so much to spend. Hope this will help you

3.0 out of 5 stars They moved on..., Dec 4 2003

While "Signify" was Porcupine's mix between more accesible songs and instrumental experiments and "Stupid dream" was filled with catchy stylish rock tracks,"Lightbulb sun" seems to be good album but totally foresight.
Music and songs are supposed to be more radio-friendly bvut also a bit sharper produced than "Stupid dream".The result is a half success.
while title track and charming "How is your life today" is another proof of Steven Wilson's genius, the other songs are not always that good."Shemovedon" is surely good,"Feel so low" could be a big christmas hit (it has such a nice melody),"Where would we be" is pink floydish masive ballad.
but each good songs has some bad contributor.
"Four chords that made a million" is mid catchy rocker, not what we could expect from this band."Last chance to evecuate planet earth..." is nothing so special too."Hatesong",a return to "Signify" dark moody style is not as pleasurable as it could be.melody seems to be written in the last moment and lyrics are too simple...
"Lightbulb sun" is just too average to give it more than 3 stars.of course i like listening it but it is not as rich as "Stupid dream" or their new masterpiece "In absentia".it features some of their classic songs but it contains a bit too much fillers.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good final independent release, July 12 2004

Don't get me wrong, I like this album, but maybe I was spoiled by Stupid Dream and Signify and the immediate impact they both had on me, and as a result Lightbulb Sun was somewhat of a letdown. But it's still well-produced and worth purchasing once it gets re-released.

Songs such as the title track, Four Chords That Made a Million, and show that Steven Wilson can write shorter well-produced songs. Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycles is an interesting use of banjo, and as others have said an eerie use of Heaven's Gate cult material. The Rest Will Flow is a nice little track that uses strings, and shows the group is willing to experiment. PT still returns to his roots with more epic songs like Hatesong and Russia On Ice. The album also has more harder sounds than the last which seems to be the progression of the group.

It's still a nice album that I'm sure will grow on me more as time passes, and a worthy final independent release and swan song for drummer Chris Maitland.
