A story with good intention, Dec 8 2005

This book was not very exciting. It has an eye-catching cover which is why I read it. I was rather disappointed. It tells the story of a girl (Katie) who moves to a new town after the death of her father. She meets new people and one of them is Zillah, a surly and anti-social girl.
Although the story is predictable and the ending somewhat anti-climatic; the symbolism is quite enjoyable. The title refers to the lilac tree that Katie's father was trying to cut when he died. It was interesting to see a parallel in Zillah's story. I don't want to spoil the story so I won't do further in to that! Let's just say that both the lilac tree and something else were blamed for causing a death.
It also impressed me that the weather usually suited what was happening in the story. Of course; it's rather too coincidental but as Katie and Zillah form a friendship the weather becomes calmer.
Overall; three stars for the symbolism and the natural dialogue. Description wasn't rich and held few metaphors. Although her writing style was easy to follow and enticing; a weak storyline makes it an average read.
