Book Description

Nov 24 2011 Extraordinary Women (Caitlin Press) (Book 1)
In 1926, Lillian Alling, a European immigrant, set out on a journey home from New York. She had little money and no transportation, but plenty of determination. In the three years that followed, Alling walked all the way to Dawson City, Yukon, crossing the North American continent on foot. She walked across the Canadian landscape, weathering the baking sun and freezing winter, crossed the rugged Rocky Mountains and hiked the untested wilderness of British Columbia and the Yukon. Finally, on a make-shift raft, she sailed alone down the Yukon River from Dawson City all the way to the Bering Sea.

Lillian Alling is a legend. She has been the subject of novels, plays, epic poems, an opera and more tall tales than can be remembered. Her life has been subjected to speculation, fiction and exaggeration. But as legendary as she may be, the true story of Lillian Alling has never been told. "The Mystery Woman," as she came to be known, is as intriguing to us now as she was to those she met on her trek. Lillian's name lives on in the folk tales of British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska, but her life leading up to her journey and what waited for her at home in Eastern Europe still remains a shadowy mystery.

Lillian Alling: The Journey Home is a collection of personal documents, first-hand recollections, family tales and archival research that provide tantalizing new clues to Lillian's story. Smith-Josephy places Lillian firmly in the context of history and among the cast of unique and colourful characters she met along her journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joyful and Inspiring Read Jan 18 2012
Format:Paperback
Susan Smith-Josephy's biography of the legendary Lillian Alling is a well-researched and compelling account of a woman who travelled over 3,000 miles, solo from New York to Siberia (largely on foot!) at a time when women were discouraged from such grand endeavour, to say the least...I doubt anyone reading this work will have read of anything else quite like it. Considering the dearth of historical detail where our female fore bearers are concerned, this book enlightens as it engages us; in what we know happened and what we imagine might have! It's a joyful and inspiring read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a pleasure... Mar 2 2012
Format:Paperback
Smith-Josephy's book is a pleasure to read. This is an intriguing story of a truly extraordinary woman. The author clearly has a careful and methodical approach to research, which makes the story all the more enjoyable. She has piqued my interest to learn more about the history of those places where Lillian Alling visited. I enjoyed the layout of the book and the incredible photos throughout. Smith-Josephy's passion and expertise in her field are evident and I eagerly await her next volume!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lillian Allung: The Journey Home Mar 2 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lillian Alling has left remarkably small footprints across the pages of history. Yet beginning in 1926, the journey of this reclusive Polish immigrant, alone and unarmed, from New York to Nome was a prodigious feat. Alling’s biographer has done a remarkable job of researching the many obscure sources that delineate her passage through the wildest and least populated areas of North America. This book does not clear up the fate of Alling, but then not all mysteries need solving to be a good read.
