Product Description

A gripping, gut-wrenching thriller that delivers suspense in almost unbearable doses, In the Line of Fire showcases Clint Eastwood at his finest. In a performance that won universal acclaim, Eastwood stars as Frank Horrigan, a veteran Secret Service agent haunted by his failure to protect John F. Kennedy from assassination. Thirty years later, he gets a chance to redeem himself when a brilliant psychopath threatens to kill the current president and take Horrigan with him. Taunting him by phone and tantalizing him with clues, the assassin (John Malkovich) lures Horrigan into an electrifying battle of wits and will that only one man can survive. Co-starring Rene Russo as Horrigan's risk-taking Field Chief, In the Line of Fire is a high-wire balancing act of searing suspense, explosive action and surprising romance.

Between his directorial duties on A Perfect World and The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood starred in this pulse-racing 1993 thriller. In the Line of Fire was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the brilliant director of the World War II U-boat masterpiece Das Boot. Eastwood gives one of his best performances as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who still feels responsible for the death of JFK 30 years earlier. Horrigan gets a shot at redemption when challenged by a psychotic but highly intelligent assassin (John Malkovich) who intends to kill the current U.S. president. Tension builds as this intellectual cat-and-mouse game reaches its climactic confrontation, but not before we've seen the killer at work, covering his trail with ruthless precision. Tightly scripted by Jeff Maguire, the film cuts Malkovich loose as one of the most memorable screen villains of the 1990s, and costars Rene Russo as Eastwood's sharp Secret Service colleague and romantic partner. The digital video disc offers standard and widescreen formats. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I enjoyed to see this movie than i qualify to one of the best police/action movie ever. the relationnship between Mr.Origan and his partener, and so whit the killer is very psychological and interesting.

Excuse my bad english.

Un des meilleur film d'action/policier que je connais. La relation entre le policier Origan est tres amusante alors que sa relation avec le tueur est tres psychologique!

Un des meilleurs du genre!!!

If you watch the film you must watch the commentary for here we have a very learned director who has studied the history of american film, down to the last dot, do north american filmmakers understand the history of film, if you atch closely(and the deleted piano scenes tells us to include these would be too campy..a wise choice..those casablanca films)you can see the hostory of film recapitulated throughout the film I'm not the only one who sees it. To touch on a point in the commentary about visual imagery, and dialogue, and scripting, and film technique that approach was read up on, a $600000 script was produced which is the basis of any good script the director finds..once you have a good script the other elements just add to the mix..complement and highlight it. He also then compares the work of Malkovitch the stage actor and he cast him in his film and he seems to be aware of his stage origins and adapting his skills to the film another form of art and the director senses the difficulty in comparison to the tv/movie star clint whom he considers pure. Actors and film people in hollywood will be surprised at this assessment and may not agree but I think this is the right word. He sais of clint he's someone who thinks, enjoys solitude, has trouble with his lines doesnt want to memorize it over and over, he's read about this clint has he's thinking, and he reminds the director of what he's read of the golden age actors like James Cagney and HUmphrey bogart who had the same kind of apprach to art..what they said they said and you werent sure if there was a retake..and they asked clint before the film if he wanted to direct or what? His latest movie has the line about Cagney the writers throw it in..Read more ›

This retro review is for the special edition release of the 1993 film,"In the Line of Fire".This well directed suspense/thriller by Wolfgang Peterson shows a well cast movie and all with "game on".
The story involves one Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan(Eastwood)who is a "living legend",in his own tongue-in-cheek words. He is the only active and still working agent who ever lost a president on his watch(JFK);which has haunted him for years and continues to dog him with his peers.Enter one killer/psycho by the name of Mitch Leary who is hell bent on killing the president. He starngely knows Horrigan's background and throughout the movie plays a cat and mouse game with him and the rest of the secret service.Horrigan and his staff always seem to be a step behind the killer and as close as they sometimes come, they can never quite put their hands on him.
Leary slowly and methodically weaves his plan, letting no one get in the way and leaving no loose ends. For example, when he opens a phony bank account and the rep catches him in a lie about his background,he follows her home and coldly kills her because he might be able to i.d. him,and her roommate because she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When Horrigan does finally obtain a lead in the form of fingerprints he is stone walled by none other than the CIA.Eventually it comes out to a much chagrined Horrigan, that Leary was an ex-CIA assasin who has now gone rogue. With this information the impetus to catch him steps up a few notches. All realize that Leary is VERY capable of doing exactly what he plans to do.It is during the president's campaigning in California that the noose tightens and the Secret Service finally get their man.Horrigan saves the president's life by taking the assasin's bullet.

The only actor i liked in this political action thriller was John Malkovitch. I mean he is one of the greatest actors alive today and this movie shows why. I loved his other movies like 'Being John Malkovitch', 'Con Air' and 'Of Mice and Men'. The tension and anger could be felt by the charecter Malkovitch played. On the other hand, this was clearly Clint Eastwood's best preformance too. The reson why this great half and half movie didn't win an oscar is because of
a. The title.
b. Based on fictional charecters and at the same time discriminating the US Government by showing lack of professionalism.
c. Only three major actors.
d. Release date.
So anyway, some might say that this is just another action flick, which it is, so if you'd like to see Eastwood play a hard nosed secret agent and hunt down a humerous, serial killer physcopath played by Malkovitch, then this movie will do alright. It may be a typical movie but the good thing about movies everybody would like to see is the highly awaited climax. So watch this if you are an action fan.
