Description
Karl, a German living in America, returns to Germany at the outbreak of World War I to fight for his country, leaving his American sweetheart, Angela, behind. A rival for Angela's affections, Jules, returns to his native France to fight. Angela goes to France to care for a dying aunt, and after being rescued when her ship is torpedoed by a German U-Boat, arrives to find her aunt dead, and the chateau a field hospital. Angela remains there, and sends secret messages to the Allies where the Germans, including Karl, occupy the town. Karl catches Angela sending messages, but when his Colonel orders her to be shot, Karl denounces the Kaiser and joins Angela to face the firing squad. A French attack led by Jules saves them, and he pardons Karl. Angela and Karl return to America.

This Pickford film is a World War I propaganda film from 1917. Mary plays Angela, an American, who inherits her aunts estate in France in the midst of WWI. Her boyfriend is a German American who goes to fight in the war on the German side. Pickford is wonderful and convincing as always.
The quality of the film is very good. The blacks and whites are very crisp and well constrasted. There are some scratches here and there that are age artifact of the film itself but it doesn't distract from your viewing of the film. The score though could use with some improvement. It sounds like a mish mosh of various pieces of music -- some of it sounding like classical music and other pieces sounding like modern new age. But this is not an Image Entertainment release and for the price the movie's presentation is pretty good.
