Review

"Immediacy of language and lightness of tone make the memoir readable, fun and vivid while at the same time providing insights into the minds of young Chinese…" - Pacific Rim Review of Books, Spring 2008

"In an often humourous way, JoAnn captures what it is like for a North American to explore China. " (Lakeshore News )

Product Description

Much has been made about how the New China has become an economic juggernaut in today's world while civil liberties and basic freedoms remain constricted. We know where the aging leadership has taken and is taking China, but what about the very young? What are they like?

When JoAnn Dionne arrived in Guangzho, she came prepared to live and teach elementary school in a Communist country. She expected to see soldiers in the streets, people in grey Mao suits, and lineups to buy toilet paper. Instead she found the world's oldest country, throwing itself headlong into the future. She found traffic jams and 24/7 constructions, neon lights and smog, shopping malls and modern high-rises. And then she met the people who would live in that future -- her students. Along with crisp insights into Chinese culture as seen through the eyes of a North American, Dionne provides a funny, often poignant glimpse of a nation undergoing rapid transformation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cheering succes for Little Emperors and JoAnn Dionne, Jun 17 2008

I cried, laughed, cheered and atop of it all, I absolutely loved the book. Though there were times when I saw the word 'market', and I was not sure if I should skip the paragraph due to what animal part, etc I would learn about next...however I did not miss a word. The flow was incredible and it made the read effortless. Questions I had regarding China were answered, and I (think) I can understand why you keep going back. Those children, the stories from Connie and the Old Man, for me, they grabbed my heart and I would yearn to learn more. Thank you so much for the insight to a complicated yet beautiful land...

5.0 out of 5 stars a treat, like char siu bao, Feb 28 2008

Travel writing, like steamed BBQ pork buns, holds an expectation for me: the tales must be savoury, well-crafted and flavourful. When they fail to deliver those things, I feel a twinge of disappointment. Good travel writing sometimes hinges only on the strength of the story: the events themselves are so compelling that the story is worthwhile despite the wooden writing. By contrast, some stories are well written, but the events are banal. And then there's a book like "Little Emperors", written with humour, strength and style, and capturing a unique period of time in China's history.

I read the book while commuting to work on the train. It may have been my chuckling that kept others from sharing my seat, an unintended side-benefit, but JoAnn's witty observations, interspersed with facts made the otherwise dull commute disappear. This is not just another "foreigner meets China" story, but rather the accomplishment of a fresh voice on the overcrowded "travel writing" shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guanzgho Jo, Feb 28 2008

Found this book to be not only informative, but entertaining. Ms. Dionne has the ability, with her written words, to take you on a stroll with her down the crowded streets of Guanzgho. This book has many illustrations that complement the writen words, and I would highly recommend it as 'must read' for anyone who is contemplating teaching in a foreign country. It will definitely be on my 'gift list' for children and adults alike and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Dionne's works, hopefully in the near future. Congratulations Ms. Dionne on your first publication. Well done!!!
