Little Hell was recorded earlier this winter at Catherine North Studios in Hamilton, ON with producer/engineer/mixer Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Mars Volta, Death Cab For Cutie). Fans got a sneak preview of a brand new track from the upcoming album when an alternate version of the song titled "Northern Wind" recently made its debut on a special Valentine's Day episode of the hit series One Tree Hill. Green performed on the episode as part of the show's story line.
Little Hell - named after the album's title track, a song that explores the little heavens and little hells that comprise a relationship - is the first of Green's albums to be recorded and mixed to tape. This sonic move ultimately resulted in the album's warm immediacy, allowing the songs to take on spaciousness previously unheard in City and Colour albums. The record allows Green to highlight all of the facets of his songwriting, from Blues-tinged rockers to pedal steel-soaked acoustic gems. Songs like "Northern Wind" have a beautiful intimacy, as if Green is in the same room and singing right to you, while "Sorrowing Man" is dark and brooding, anchored by an ominous organ in the chorus. The record also highlights Green's impressive vocal range, from driving a full band on the rousing chorus of "Natural Disasters" or sighing mellifluously on opener "We Found Each Other in the Dark."

I was lucky enough to have heard the album before its release date, thanks to a full (LEGAL) preview of it on the MuchMusic website. I must have listened to it about three or four times on that free stream alone, before finally getting my hands on a copy for my birthday. If you love City and Colour, you will not be disappointed with this album. If you don't love City and Colour, you may well be pleasantly surprised by it. While it does have its acoustic songs, which is what City and Colour is known for, Dallas Green has branched out further this time and has experimented with more instruments and tracks that have more of a beat. The first single off of this album, 'Fragile Bird,' is only the first example of this; it's dark, its sound is gritty, and those who are not big fans of acoustic music will get a taste of what Dallas has to offer. Another great example is 'Weightless,' where, upon one such live performance, Dallas himself told the audience that they could, 'feel free to dance.' It's a bit heavier on the rock side than most City and Colour music, though certainly not anywhere close to Alexisonfire fare. The lyrics, as fans (myself included) have come to expect, are beautiful and poignant. They are oftentimes sad, but what strikes me most about this album is how many times I stopped and felt a small tingle run through me as I thought, 'this is exactly what I'm going through right now.' The title track, 'Little Hell,' specifically made me feel this way. If you are going through a tough time in your life, the lyrics will no doubt resonate on a very deep level with you. This album is nothing less than pure and sincere -- something which so many musicians are lacking these days. Give it a listen. I'm sure you'll love it.

City and Colour undoubtedly is the best musical act to enter the scene in DECADES!!! Yes I said decades! Dallas Green's voice is undeniably impeccable....and his instrumentation ability....haven't heard anyone this good on the guitar.....hmmmm.....since maybe Neil Young back in the day.He has an astute ability to know exactly what to write, how to write it..then how to couple that with the instruments he chooses to select to accompany those profoundly deep meaningful lyrics. As an added bonus is his voice....which I think is the best voice I think I've ever heard. Without a doubt this is a musician not only with remarkable abilities but a higher than the average bear I.Q. and the great ability to be sensitive & cool all at the same time! O'Sister is such a beautiful song....it makes me wish I literally was his sister. The guitar work is fabulous on this song. For the listener just to let you know......EVERY SINGLE TRACK ON THIS CD....is outstanding! If your going to buy a CD that you will play FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE then buy this CD this summer because it is the BEST CD OF 2011!!!!!! I could critique every single song.....but I don't need to because we would be here forever with a critique that will for every single song...tell you.....it is worth buying because the whole CD is that good! Cheers to all the music junkies out there like myself CindyLittle Hell
