I gave the musical five stars, not this movie. What were they thinking by not putting the original cast in it!!!If they can remake all these other movies, they can remake A Little Night Music, and put some damn good singers in there. Does anybody know a producer? I don't. Get cracking!! This is too good a musical to have just the one pitiful example.

The 1976 film version of this show has been JUSTIFIABLY panned. Forget it. Listen instead to the soundtrack album and bask in what is Sondheim's most lilting score. An entire musical in triple time written by a composer at the height of his powers: What more could one ask??

Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are moving even if you are not familiar with his charming music. Even those who do not like musicals will like the book of this show. It is intelligent....yet moving.

Great Keepsake July 16 2012
By J. Mathews - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I've recently been cast in a local production of this show, but wanted to get a head-start on my lines before the rehearsal materials came in. After comparing this with the licensed materials that came from MTI, they scripts are identical (save a few words here and there). No major changes have been made to the script. The best part about owning my own copy is that I can high light and mark it up without having to worry about sending it back after the show is over. There are also some black and white pictures from multiple productions of the show, as well as lists of major productions and available soundtracks included in this book. An amazing show, and a great souvenir for those who have seen it or taken part in a production.

It is very rich, indeed Aug. 16 2014
By Allen Smalling - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is the paperback libretto of Stephen Sondheim's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973), authored by the late Hugh Wheeler. (It is not to be confused with the piano score or vocal score of the musical, available separately, some of whose reviews have, unfortunately, wound up at this site). I need hardly say that A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is a marvelous play based on Ingmar Bergman's 1955 film SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. This book contains the text of Sondheim's songs as they occur within the play, and dovetails nicely with the cast album (Little Night Music). Numeous bells and whistles make this book not only appropriate but downright enjoyable, including a vintage Hirschfeld reproduction of most of the Broadway show's principals (among them Len Cariou, Glynis Johns and Hermione Gingold), costume sketches for the women, cast listings for the Broadway, London, operatic and film versions, capsule bios of Wheeler, Sondheim and Jonathan Tunick (orchestrator, who also wrote an admirable introduction to this volume), and a discography current to about 1990. At this price you can't go wrong!

Yes, Full Vocal Score May 12 2007
By Daniel B. Allan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I'm not sure why there are review for the book and the movie, or why someone comments that this isn't the full score. I ordered it, and they sent me the full piano/vocal conductor's score.

BUY THIS! April 15 2008
By S. Mokes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A Little Night Music is Sondheim's most beautiful show. it also has probably the most brilliant lyrics of any (especially songs like Now, Liasons, and Weekend in the Country.) My single disappointment with this score is that it does not contain the alternate version of "Glamorous Life" sung by Fredrika, which is probably the second most beautiful, heartbreaking song that Stephen ever wrote. this song was not in the original Broadway production but is included in many ever since it was used in the film. If you have never hear it, go out and find a recording of it. the song is available in other books (sondheim anthologies and musical theatre books) so do not fret

Terrific Writing May 30 2011
By J. Smallridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
What I did to thoroughly enjoy reading Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" is read the play while listening to the music. This work contains some of his best songs -- including the "Soon," "Later," "Now" pieces that stay with a reader and a listener long after they finish.
