Finger puppet good, translation not so much. Nov. 10 2012
By Robert Beveridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Lauren Michelle Smith (trans.), Little Seal (Chronicle Books, 2012)

I'd be much, much fonder of this book, which the kid is crazy about because of the plush finger puppet, if translator Smith had even, well, tried really, with that last page. The rest of it sets up a simple rhythm and rhyme scheme, and then you get to the last couplet and... what? No, seriously, what? The rhythm disappears, the rhyme scheme is gone, the entire thing just breaks down. According to the back of the book, there are at the time of its publication twenty-seven books in this series. I'm going to grab another one at some point to see if the others have the same problems. I hope not, because I'd like to grab some more of these. **
