5.0 out of 5 stars Do you know what Valley Fever is?, May 7 2010
By Wayne S. Walker "Home School Book Review" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Little Skiff Copes with Valley Fever (Paperback)
Do you know what Valley Fever is? Have you even heard of it? If you live in Arizona, chances are that you are acquainted with it and maybe have even had it. Little Skiff, the Shetland Sheepdog who moved from Alaska to Arizona, is back. The now two-year-old Sheltie likes to run and play in the Arizona sun, digging around to sniff out tidbits of food that people have dropped in the grass. However, one day while Little Skiff is out with the children who own him to clean up after a dust storm, he becomes very sick. When he gets worse, he has to go to the vet. Dr. Marla says that he has Valley Fever. Is there anything that can be done for Little Skiff? Will he get better?
Valley Fever is a fungal infection. The fungus that causes it lives in the ground in the Southwest. When a dog digs, spores from the fungus can escape from the ground and become airborne. The spores can also be carried by the wind during dust storms. Most people and animals have a natural immunity against the disease, but if some people or animals inhale the spores they can get contaminated. Fortunately, it is not contagious from dog to dog or from dog to person. Author and illustrator Dany Pierard-Deviche, who is a former research biologist and also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, tells a delightful story in which Little Skiff must learn to cope with his own illness, thus giving strength and courage to children who are dealing with health issues, especially any who might have Valley Fever. Little Skiff Copes with Valley Fever is a wonderful book that will teach children how to remain confident in the face of adversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Skiff Copes With Valley Fever, Mar 10 2010

I adored this second book about Skiff the Shetland sheepdog. Once again Skiff is telling his story which is a delight to my youngest grandson. Skiff and his owners are now living in Phoenix, Arizona. Skiff is having a lot of fun in his new home. He loves to dig,run in the sun and play in the rain.

One morning Skiff woke up and did not feel well. He had never been sick but knew that something was wrong.

His owners took him to a vet and that is when they found out Skiff has Valley Fever.
This little book is educational as you get to see real X-rays, listen as a veterinarian explains all about what Valley Fever is and how long it can last. You will find a glossary of words at the end of the book. That will help little minds to understand words they may not know.

Excellent Read
