A great recap of her career so far, Jui 17 2009
Those who love Stevie Nicks, whether as a solo artist or as a member of Fleetwood Mac, know how captivating a live performer she truly is. Her connection to her repertoire remains heartfelt after all these years, her stage presence is intense without retorting to gimmicks such as choreography and special effects, and watching this legend sing is a rock and roll experience in itself. Given this, it's about time she finally released a new concert on DVD as a solo artist; the last time she did was over twenty years ago, with the "Live at Red Rocks" concert.
"Live in Chicago" find Stevie performing many songs considered essential to her repertoire, from Fleetwood Mac classics ("Sara", "Dreams", "Landslide", "Rhiannon", "Gold dust woman") to some of her own solo smashes ("Stand back", "If anyone falls", "Edge of seventeen", "Sorcerer"). The set is peppered with essential album tracks from her own albums, such as "Enchanted", "How still my love" and "Fall from grace". She also delivers some great covers from Dave Matthews ("Crash"), Led Zeppelin ("Rock and roll") and Bonnie Raitt ("Circle dance"), all of which performed in her unique singing style. There is also a wonderful guest appearance by Vanessa Carlton on "The one" (a song from Carlton's third album) and on "Circle dance", both of which are performed here as duets. It's a wonderful set list, one that highlights the fact that this woman has had an incredible run as a singer and as a songwriter. Stevie tells many stories about these songs, some of which are downright funny (her intro on "Sara", for instance) and some of which are moving ("Landslide", dedicated to her late father). Most of all, she seems to be having a ball; while her live concerts with Fleetwood Mac often find her in a more austere mood, as a solo performer she is obviously having more fun on stage.
I couldn't help but wish that she had included more of her solo hits, but then again many of them have oddly been dropped from her solo concerts over the years. Classics such as "Talk to me", "Stop dragging my heart around", "Rooms on fire", "Leather and lace", "Has anyone ever written anything for you", "Planets of the universe" and "I can't wait" would have made great additions to this set. Then again one can't get everything all the time; taken for what it is, this concert is a great recap of her career... so far !
Diehard fans would be wise to put their hands on the accompanying CD, "The Soundstage Sessions". It features nine selections from this concert (including the triumphant "Sara", a real treat given the fact that Stevie has refused to sing this one on stage for many years) and one song that is not on the DVD, the achingly beautiful "Beauty and the beast". It's a great companion to this DVD.
