'Ere's a song for ya!,
By
This review is from: Live At Donnington 1990 (2CD/1DVD) (Audio CD)
Hard to believe that I have been waiting for this live album for over 20 years!Back in 1990 when Steve Vai was in Whitesnake, I was a huge fan of both. This was like a dream come true for me. Vai's Passion & Warfare album, still one of the greatest guitar instrumental albums of all time, changed my entire musical landscape. Vai stretched the boundaries not just of guitar, but of mainstream music in general. Team him up with the very mainstream Whitesnake and you have a really fascinating combination. Did it work? Sometimes! But I think in 1991 when Coverdale disbanded the 'Snake for the first time, he wouldn't have wanted this live album to be his band's legacy. It's far removed from the blues-rock at his heart. So now 20 years later, we finally get to hear the legendary 1989-1990 lineup of Coverdale, Vai, Adrian Vandenberg (guitar), Rudy Sarzo (bass), and Tommy Aldridge (drums). And we get to see it too, on the included DVD! This 3-pack is definitely the best economical choice for aquiring Donnington 1990. Musically, it's a wild ride. It's not the Steve Vai show. Adrian gets just a many solos, and his are still spine-tingling if more conventional. It is loaded with 'Snake hits, leaning heavily on the three Geffen albums. In fact there is only one pre-Slide It In song included: The Bobby "Blue" Bland cover "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City". And, since it is also the pre-grunge era, there are plenty of solos, which today seems excessive. Aldridge does his drum solo at the end of "Still Of The Night". Vandenberg gets his "Adagio for Strato"/"Flying Dutchman Boogie". Most excitingly, Steve Vai performs two songs from his then-brand new (and top 40!) album Passion And Warfare: "For The Love Of God" and "The Audience Is Listening", with Aldridge on drums. Coverdale even introduces him as "Mr. Passion and Warfare!" so I imagine there was no sour grapes that Vai's album was doing so well. And lemme tell ya folks -- the audience WAS listening, and going nuts too! As far as the 'Snake tunes go, this lineup works best on the more space-aged music from the recent Vai-helmed Slip Of The Tongue. When the slip back to older John Sykes-era music...well, it's weird hearing Vai replace those catchy Sykes solos with his own slippery concoctions. It's amazing to listen to. Is it the "right" sound for this band? Clearly, no. But it was what it was. Of note, Coverdale's voice was in pretty rough shape at the start of the 90's. It's much stronger now, but here it is rougher, leathery, and worn. While this album won't be considered Whitesnake's live peak (that would be the Sykes era, although they are very strong today too), it is definitely an essential part of the story. And it's so long overdue, hard to believe that a live album with Vai was sitting in the cans for so long. And it doesn't sound too bad. It sounds like it was recorded at a massive outdoor festival (which it was), flaws and all. The DVD included would have been better released on VHS back in 1991, because at times it is very fuzzy, especially in long shots. What can you do? It was the technology of the time. Just be forwarned. It's wonderful to see Vai teasing the audience, hiding behind his guitar, and playing acrobatics with it. It's worth having, just don't expect anything that will look as sharp as a modern live DVD. 4 stars. Long awaited, though imperfect.

Very good but not perfect ..,
This review is from: Live At Donnington 1990 (2CD/1DVD) (Audio CD)
First of all, i'm a big fan of whitesnake ! The sound of the Cd is good, IT'S PURE Hair Metal sound !!! Vai and but the video quality in DVD is not very good .. I know that is the 90's tour but the quality should be better and it's the reason of 4/5 star. Vai and Vandenberg rock all the show and they add to the song a lots of whammy bar trick and it's cool ! David Coverdale have the best voice of all time ! ;) Buy it !

AN INSTANT CLASSIC,

Finally one of the most requested recordings in hard rock gets an official release in June 2011 by "Frontiers Records". This is arguably "Whitesnake" at the peak of their international popularity headlining the "Monsters of rock" festival in the UK with the legendary line up of David Coverdale (v), Andrian Vandenberg (g), Steve Vai (g), Rudy Sarzo (b) and Tommy Aldridge (d).BACKGROUND OF WHITESNAKE AT DONNINGTON This 2CD plus DVD set is a perfect documentation of "Whitesnake"s headline performance at the "Monster of Rock 1990" festival at Donnington, England. "Whitesnake" had previously performed at "Monsters of Rock" in 1980 and 1983-at which time they also headlined and shot a live video for a domestic release entitled "Whitesnake Commandos". THE RECORDINGS AND SURROUNDING CIRCUMSTANCES It has to be addressed that the recordings of audio and video were NEVER intended to serve for a commercial release. The audio was recorded and transmitted live by the BBC radio; the video served as real-time footage for the large video-walls of the event so that all 75.000 people could have a decent view of what was happening on stage. The sound has been remixed and re-mastered to perfection, all instruments come through clearly, capturing each musician's distinct sound. Tommy Adridge's drum attack is up front in the mix with all toms and cymbals audible, Rudy Sarzo's bass is clean and ever-present while the guitars are perfectly defined bringing every minor improvisation to front, you will actually be able to tell the difference between Vandenberg's and Vai's sound from the CD alone. The video, as mentioned above, was professionally shot but not for the purpose of a video-release, simply for direct transmission. This practically implies that you get many cameras covering the event but not all angles are perfect, in addition the definition is found to be slightly lacking and finally the colours are rather imbalanced. At the end of the day, however, the content more than makes up for the lack of HD: you get all the rock-star poses from the band, all stage theatrics have been captured and most importantly all members have a respectable video presence on each and every song, so you get to see all five snakes playing and moving around the large stage. EXTRA FEATURES The DVD provides the option for 2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround sound which is quite a feat for an early recording as this; both options are impeccable. In terms of bonus material there is a gallery with stills from the same era but most importantly an extensive behind the scenes video. This video goes through the recording process of the multi platinum "Slip of the tongue" album finding the band in the studio near lake Tahoe testing ideas and having fun, the entry of Steve Vai in the line up, the process of filming the promo videos for the album as well as live footage, all topped by commentary by David Cloverdale who is the ideal narrator for such a journey. OVERALL "Live at Donnington 1990" is a breathtaking documentation of the "Whitesnake" golden era and captures nothing less than a band at the top of hard rock/hair metal world. Whatever limitations of the footage do not make this package any less enjoyable and certainly take nothing away from the amazing performances that were delivered that night. Needless to say, this is a must for anyone in 80s rock. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Live At Donnington 1990 (2CD/1DVD) (Audio CD)
I first just want to say that I am very excited that this show has finally been released.I purchased the CD/DVD combo, and while the performance and audio quality are excellent, I'm not a huge fan of the video. My problem is not with the video quality itself, since it's about what I expected given when it was shot and because it was not filmed for an official release. The video does, however, look much better on my smaller 37" TV than it does on my 52" TV. One thing that I do not like about the video is that it's comprised mostly of individual close-ups, with very few shots showing more than one band member at a time. I'm guessing that this is because they had to use the video feeds that were displayed on the big screens during the actual concert, which are usually all close-up shots. Some other annoying things about the video are that the video often changes from color to black & white, and there are several cheesy slo-mo effects used througout the video. Even though I don't care much for the DVD, the CDs alone get 5 stars and make this is an excellent purchase for the price. This concert will be getting a lot of play time in my CD player and on my iPod. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful

Definite upgrade to the long available freely traded versions,
By Stephen Johansson "Sentient Six" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Live At Donnington 1990 (2CD) (Audio CD)
I had my misgivings about purchasing the "Live At Donington 1990" disc because of other "officially released" versions of shows from other artists that have come out lately have failed to be an upgrade over the versions that have been available on the free trade boards for years. Notably these are the "Live at LA Forum 1983" disc that came with the legacy edition of Def Leppard's "Pyromania" which actually sounds WORSE than the bootleg (how they managed that, I have no idea) and the Dio "Live At Donington" which I bought the Japanese SHM version and is only a slight improvement over the free trade versions. I am happy to say that this release is a dramatic improvement over the free trade versions. All the instruments have depth and the vocals sound great. They did stick with a very live sound in the production. Yes, that does sound stupid but this disc actually sounds like you're at a concert; the audience is up in the mix, the drums sound how they should sound at a concert. Too many live albums get produced like studio albums and lose that live vibe and feel to them but "Live At Donington 1990" actually does make you feel like you're at the show. The only issue I have with any of the performances is the Steve Vai "solo" track "For The Love Of God." It just doesn't have the same impact as live versions that I've heard with his own back up band. This could be due to the fact that Vandenberg, Sarzo and Aldridge felt that Vai treated them AS a backing band and didn't feel like putting their all into it or they're not used to performing instrumentals or a hundred other reasons but, whatever the reason, the performance on this song falls flat. Other than that, it's a great representation of live 'Snake at that moment in time and would be a worthy addition to any CD collection. |
