Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. La dame est jeune, jolie, photogénique et, de surcroît, s'entoure des meilleurs arrangeurs – Johnny Mandel, Claus Ogerman dont les partitions apportent beaucoup à ses disques. Ne boudons donc pas notre plaisir à l'écoute de ces concerts qu'elle donna à l'Olympia de Paris, les 28 et 29 novembre 2001, de ces chansons de Cole Porter, George et Ira Gershwin, Joni Mitchell, des standards de diverses époques que Diana affectionne. Elle est aussi la propre pianiste de son quartette avant de se faire rejoindre sur scène par l'Orchestre symphonique européen et par Claus Ogerman lui-même dans "'S Wonderful". A long overdue live recording...!

I've been following Diana Krall's career for a number of years, and to be perfectly honest, I found that her previous effort, "The Look of Love," to be quite disappointing. I was convinced that she had finally sold out. However, she has more than redeemed herself with this album, "Live in Paris." I've actually seen her live in Montreal at the jazz festival several years ago when it was still possible to get tickets an hour after tickets went on sale. Her performance was nothing short of stunning, and it was clear to me then that she was holding back in the recording studio. Although this disc is no substitute for the live experience, it certainly gives one a taste of Diana Krall at her best. Much of her musical creativity and improvisational wit comes through in the many tracks. I was especially enthralled by her treatment of the Billy Joel classic, "Just the Way You Are," even though it is clearly a studio session.
I strongly recommend this disc to one and all, whether you are a long-time Diana Krall fan like me or someone who may be looking for something new. This is great jazz by a great lady.

I really enjoyed "Diana Krall - Live in Paris) video - the camera work - the sound was unbelievable - the whole package was like being there in person.
I have a 51 inch TV - so it was like sitting in the audience - I could have watched another hour !!!

I could drink a case and still be standing...Diana is booze to me. Canadiana all the way. Truly wonderful to hear an artist that embodies the essence of Canada. This album is jazz with a personal line.
I bought this album solely for 'A Case of You', but got the other tracks as a bonus, no let down here.

I bought "Girl in the Other Room" and did not care for that depressing album at all. But when a friend played this for me, I could not believe it was the same singer. Read more
