"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

A legeondary performance, reasonably well recorded in an almost perfect accoustical environment. This is what Live At Massey Hall is all about. Neil's voice is excellent, emotive, full of expression. I love when he introduces his "new" song, Old Man, which had not been released up to that point. This is a 2 LP set that is extremely well mastered from the orig tapes- deff worth a purchase- must own.

As an "on again off again" Neil Young fan, I found this album very interesting. I bought it pretty much to have a master copy of the premier of the song: "Old Man" but there are several other golden hits on this recording. I do like the authenticity of the sound, although it seems Neil may have been a bit high because he does go on and on making some references that are out of context with the songs. Ah well. Seems that's what the 70's were about. A very good Cd. Musically very pure, no production, just neil and a guitar and MAN does he sound like a teenager.

Listened to Neil for ever. Hes gone through multiple styles over the decades, but alone on stage with his instruments is simply the best. This CD is pretty much perfect, sounds amazing, and his commentary between songs is very cool. Hes doing what he does best, being Neil young and nothing more. A must have CD.
