With such a wealth of material, one might expect a few duds. There are none. Great example of how simply wonderful a live album can be.

Please Serena, May I Have More?,

This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
There are nine tracks on this Serena Ryder "Live" EP, also billed as "Live in South Carolina", but only six are live:Live Tracks 1. Melancholy Blue 2. Little Bit Of Red 3. Brand New Love 4. Weak In The Knees 5. All For Love 6. Sing Sing Previously Released Studio Tracks 7. Sisters Of Mercy 8. What I Wanna Know New Studio Track 9. Broken Heart Sun Of the live tracks, "Melancholy Blue" and "Sing Sing" are a capella tracks. A different version of "Melancholy Blue", with accompaniment, appeared on her "Serena Ryder - Live" EP. A capella versions of "Sing Sing", what I call her clown-around song, also appeared on her "Unlikely Emergency" CD and on her "Live in OZ" EP. The arrangements of the live tracks " Little Bit Of Red" , "Brand New Love", "Weak In The Knees", and "All For Love" are all similar to those of the studio tracks on her "Is it O.K." CD. Serena fans should also compare an earlier version of "Weak In The Knees" on her "If Your Memory Serves You Well" CD. "Sisters Of Mercy" is a studio track from "If Your Memory Serves You Well"; and "What I Wanna Know" is a studio track from "Is it O.K.". "Broken Heart Sun" is a fantastic new duet with Melissa Etheridge, with whom she has been touring in Canada. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they come down to the States. Their voices and styles blend harmoniously. Even though this EP is somewhat of a mish-mosh collection, rather than a true live CD, I rate it a 5 because the music is extraordinary. The sound on the live tracks are all crisp and clean. I do wish that the live tracks were more different from the studio tracks. I'm also a fan of Sarah McLachlan, and she has multiple versions of many of her songs ... I'm always amazed at how the same song can range from quiet, contemplative, soulful to vibrant, dynamic, rocking. Most of Serena's songs also have rich, poetic lyrics and would lend themselves to varied arrangements. Serena has two previous live EPs. I really wish her record company would release a full live concert CD (and, better yet, a live DVD). I was fortunate to catch her at Lilith 2010. She has great stage presence, her voice carries well, and her rapport with her audience is sincere. I never heard of her before Lilith, but I soon bought all her records. You can order this live EP and her previous two live EPs directly from Serena's website Canada store. I ordered all three at the same time. Even with the cost of shipping from Canada to the US, I saved a lot of $ from what many vendors here are charging. |
