4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent album Jun 4 2004

Live At Reading '81 (1981.) Samson's first live album.

Before Bruce Dickinson joined the mighty Iron Maiden, he was the lead vocalist in Paul Samson's band. Although these days of his career tend to go overlooked by most, they are actually an excellent phase of his career that is worth checking out if you're a fan of his. The last concert he did with the band was recorded and released as a live album. Read on for my review of Live At Reading '81.

PROS:
-If you want a live album that captures the energy of the band, as only a live recording could do, this release will be perfect for you.
-The band plays most of their big hits.
-Every member of the band is in their prime here.

CONS:
-This album (and every other Samson recording) is extremely hard to find. If you want this, you're probably going to have to order it.
-The sound quality could have been better.
-Many of the songs fail to top their studio counterparts.

OVERALL:
Overall, this is very good release from Samson. I wish it was more readily available, though. If you're a fan of Bruce Dickinson's and you want to see what he did in his pre-Maiden days, pick up this album. It's doubtful you'll be disappointed with it. Also, don't forget about the studio albums he released with them!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Dickinson Fans April 12 2004
Format:Audio CD
I'd always thought of Samson as the poor man's Iron Maiden. Not to say that Samson are not any good. If you like the nwobhm explosion, you'll like "Live at Reading".
This was the last show that Bruce did with Samson. It was also the show that convinced Steve Harris to hire Dickinson to sing for Iron Maiden.
"Live at Reading" is a good live album. It sounds good and the production is pretty decent. All the essential Samson hits are hear. "Take it Like a Man, Vice Versa, Big Brother and Walking out on You" are some of the classic tracks performed. Paul Samson is no Dave Murray or Adrain Smith, but he seems to be perfect for what kind of music Samson plays.
I had read about Samson and was surprised at how good they sounded on this live album because I was led to believe that musically, Samson just were'nt that good.
True, the songs are'nt as catchy as a lot of other nwobhm bands, but Samson deserve a fair shot at glory, especially with Bruce on vocals.
If you are a Bruce Dickinson completist, you must have this!

This is Bruce's last show with Samson before Joining a Band called Iron Maiden, this album catches samson at it's best, recorded live at the famous Reading Festival in the U.K.

Hear bruce's voice at it's best ripping into the song's like earth mother, hammerhead, riding with the angels and bright lights.

This album is a must, once listened you will play it again and again.
The guitar work from mr samson is great to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bruce Dickinson-Legend in the making Sep 16 2009

If you want to know why Mr. Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and the group's Manager, Rod Smallwood quickly ushered in Mr. Bruce Dickinson into their fold you will realize why after hearing this remarkable CD! Mr. Harris and Mr. Smallwood were in the audience during this gig and were taken with Mr. Dickinson! The rest is history! Bruce Dickinson is still going strong to this day with Iron Maiden and I believe that this gig at Reading in 1981 was just the beginning!

This has to be one of the best if not THE best live recordings I have ever heard from any band that I know of! Bruce's vocals are amazing!! He puts so much heart and soul as well as passion into every note he sings! If I could pick one song that would illustrate my opinion in this it would be, "Walking Out On You." The music builds up to a mighty belting out of, "Cuz I'm walking out on you" from Bruce! Clear and strong are the vocals!! Well, I could go on and on with my review but I recommend that you listen for yourself and I think you will agree with me. This is excellent!!
