Praise for Liverpool Miss: 'Records of hardship during the Thirties or earlier are not rare; but this has features that make it stand apart' Observer 'The story of a young girl's courage and perseverance against adversity! warm-hearted and excellent' Manchester Evening News

Book Description

The continuing story of Helen Forrester's poverty-stricken childhood in Liverpool during the Depression.

The Forrester family is slowly winning their fight for survival. But fourteen-year-old Helen's personal battle is to persuade her parents to allow her to earn her own living, to lead her own life after the years of neglect and inadequate schooling while she cared for her six younger brothers and sisters. Her untiring struggles against illness caused by severe malnutrition and dirt (she has her first bath in four years), and above all the selfish demands of her parents, make this story of amazing courage and perseverance both heartbreaking and inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, heartbreaking continuation of her story, July 14 2009

This is the second in Helen Forrester's autobiographical series following Twopence to Cross the Mersey. She tells her story very matter-of-factly, with no trace of self-pity. I don't think I've ever been inspired by anyone as much as I have been by Helen Forrester. I know I will never feel sorry for myself again after reading her story. She was raised in the most appalling poverty but she rose above it and became a successful writer. I would love to meet her.

Hellen Forester is a writer like no other. I have read several of her books and all of them made me feel as if I was standing by audience. It is real! I absolutely love the way she writes, her documentary of the Depression times, her sense of humor and the sense of coming to your heart is unbelievable. Don't believe me? Read any of her books yourself. :-0

My Aunt suggested I read Helen Forrester's books so that I might understand more of what growing up was like for her in the 1930's of the East End of London. Although Helen's story takes place in Liverpool the stories are very similar and helped me to understand so much about the hardships our parents and grandparents endured. In these uncertain financial times so many of us are one paycheck away from being homeless. Helen's courage can be an inspriation for us all that we can endure, grow and eventually prosper under great hardship.

This is a great read for any age. I would suggest it for teens for Christmas to remind them just how lucky they are to be growing up in such a rich society.
