Book Description

Aug 11 2009
A collection that provides a compelling and insightful look into the world of ICU nurses.

This is a compelling collection of stories by twenty-five nurses working in the ICU, a fast-paced, highly technological environment where patients’ lives are at stake. From cardiac, medical, surgical, and trauma units, these nurses share their experiences of caring for critically ill patients after major surgery, illnesses, accidents, traumas, and even multiple-organ failure. These skilled professionals impart their knowledge and insights, along with accounts of the many challenges, stresses, joys, and dilemmas they face in the ICU. The intense emotional and psychological issues that patients, families — and the nurses, themselves — undergo are also explored. This fascinating collection allows us to peer over the shoulders of nurses while they provide life-saving care to patients.

I really enjoyed this book and have encouraged my friends and colleagues to buy it as well. Very real.
This would be a good one for nursing students to read before venturing into this wonderful profession.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real deal Jan 8 2011

This collection of stories give an accurate and spot on description of exactly the "way it is". As a nurse, I appreciated their honesty. They didn't sugar coat anything. The perspectives of their experiences came across with honesty and their dedication to their patients tells what special people good nurses are. I don't normaly give five stars but this book was great.....loved it. Only wished it was longer.

I ordered this book because I remembered reading Echo Heron's book more than 25 years ago. As a patient in an ICU last year (total hospital time - 24 days), it opened my eyes to just how difficult their job must be. I have nothing but praise for the nurses in the ICU while I was a patient (and I told the hospital that). Nursing is sometimes a thankless job, but this book is worth everyone's time.
