Product Description

The mannered vocal style that has always been the most off-putting element of Ani DiFranco's music is still present on this two-disc live set, but for some reason it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe it's the way you can hear DiFranco using her breaths to accent a rhythm section that's downright merciless with its circling, pulsing, scary grooves. Or maybe it's the way, with an audience screaming, she pours heart and soul into "Unforgettable Face" and the story song "Gravel." Whatever, Living in Clip is the album where DiFranco begins to deserve her hype. And "Amazing Grace," backed by the Buffalo Philharmonic, is where she surpasses it. --David Cantwell

5.0 out of 5 stars Living in clip June 16 2004
Format:Audio CD
Ani Difranco is one of the few artists who has made a successful career out of her do-it-yourself ethics. She has bypassed the conventional career path most artists takes by not signing with a major record label and by doing that, she has a greater percentage intake in the profits from her music as opposed to being in debt for years to a major record label. I always have and always will respect Ani for taking the high road and do things her way. I was a big fan of Ani Difranco when I was a college student in Wisconsin nine years ago. I first heard about her in a magazine (I think) and decided to check out her music. "Dilate" was my first Ani Difranco cd. I was hooked. During the next few years, I would buy her latest cds religiously on the day they were release, one of them was "Living in Clip". I rarely buy live cds but in Ani Difranco's case, I was willing to buy a live cd of her music. Besides there were a bunch of songs at the time I hadn't heard before like the gorgeous "Both Hands" (my all-time favorite Ani Difranco song) and "Sorry I Am". "Living in Clip" is definitely one of the best live cds that I have ever heard. Although each song was recorded in different cities, you would have never guessed that they weren't recorded at one performance. The occasional banter with the audience gives the listener an intimate insight of an Ani Difranco performance. One of the most stunning performances on the cd is Ani's rendition of "Amazing Grace" with the Buffalo Philharmonic. It simply took my breath away. That alone makes this cd worth listening to. Although I am not nearly the fan that I am of Ani's music any more, I still enjoy throwing in "Living in Clip" every now and then. This is a good representation of Ani Difranco as an artist as well as a performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accidentally Perfect.... Oct. 30 2002
Format:Audio CD
I bought this set on a whim, after a listen to a few songs at the local independant music store...WOW. I had never purchased any of DiFranco's recordings before, much less even heard of her. I was immediately hooked on this album, and couldn't get enough of it. I really identified with her experiences, for example, heart ache, sexism, political injustice, etc. Her guitar playing is fantastic, and the live element is someting wonderful, her studio recordings do not compare. There are only three musicians Living In Clip: Andy Stochansky, Sara Lee, and of course Ani Difranco. Andy and Ani's friendship is evident through their conversations onstage, in fact all of Ani's blurbs and commentary are very effective in bringing you closer to the artist. If you like artists such as Tori Amos, Emmylou Harris, Patty Smith, most likely you will enjoy Ani as well.
*Just a note: I have purchased studio recorded material from Ani DiFranco and haven't found any of it to be half as satisfying as Living in Clip.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Live CD I Own April 10 2002
Format:Audio CD
Yes, this CD is surely a gem. I recently bought it about a two months ago and both Discs have never left my 5 CD DISC Changer.
I can't even begin to tell you what an amazing artist/folk singer/poet/feminist/anarchist/socialist/intelligent young woman Ani is. At a point in my life when it is difficult to find people of likemind I must say that Ani is my inspiration. I play this CD over and over again in the morning and it "helps me through my day" which is exactly what Ani's music is meant to do. Now I could sit here and wax poetic about Ani's politics, ideals, and her charming personality, but I do believe her music and this particular CD are the topic at hand.
This CD is absolutely perfect for anybody beginning an Ani collection and a must for all Aniphiles. It has music from all different time periods and stages of Ani's career giving you a broad look at the punk folksinger's various talents and abilities. Ani is especially real on this CD; It's pure soul, the persistence of the human spirit. Her voice, her trusty guitar, the band, and of course, her screaming fans. Which is exactly what an Ani concert consists of.
I can't tell you anymore about this CD than that I IMPLORE you to buy it if you haven't. And if you don't you shall surely be missing out on one of the most engaging artists to come around in years.

Ani may cross many genres, but at heart she is still a folk artist. As Ani said in the book to Living in Clip, "I've never been a studio musician. Very few folksingers are, I think. We travel. We play music for people, not posterity. No permanence." Her studio albums, while still worth owning, don't give a full view of Ani's creative mind. Living in Clip does. For those that can't make it to an Ani concert, Living in Clip is the next best thing. This album is also perfect for people just getting into Ani's music because it gives a nice little sample of all her previous albums. It includes everything from her beautifully outspoken poetry ("The Slant" and "Tiptoe") to her funny little anecdotes ("Distracted" and "Travel Tips"). Oh, yeah, and there's some pretty great music in there too (the live version of "Both Hands" is absolutely phenomenal). So. If you need a place to start your Ani collection or are just looking for some great music from a great chick singer, buy Living in Clip. You won't be disappointed.
