This is the first book any owner of a deaf dog should get. It helps with the basics and helps you realize that your dog can live a normal life. Because of this book I took my dog to a dog trainer and my dog learned basic obedience along with all the hearing dogs. The trainer was wonderful about helping us. I also bought some sign language books to learn other signs to teach my dog also.

I adopted a puppy from the animal shelter about 3 months ago and about two weeks later realized she was deaf. This book helped me so much to just relate to the stories that other owners of deaf dogs wrote about how they interact with their dog and different ways to communicate with them. There is a very special bond already between myself and Winnie, because she doesn't hear, she is more in tune with my facial expressions and can sense my mood like no other dog I have ever owned. I have already taught her some of the different signs suggested in the book and we are learning more every day. I definitely recomend this book not only to those who have deaf dogs but to any dog owner!

I was incredibly disappointed with this book, having heard it hyped on ever deaf dog website or literature I came across. I have owned a deaf dog for four years. This book was not helpful or useful to me at all. I would imagine that someone who is considering adopting a deaf dog, or someone who has just adopted a deaf dog would find it helpful. The book was published in 1997, the same year I adopted my deaf dog. I never encountered the problems the author discussed, and a great deal has changed in the deaf dog owner community in the past four years. Basically, if you have already gotten past the basics with your deaf dog... pass this book up!
