Housing provides not only a place to live but can enhance feelings of belonging and community that may be lost as people age. Porcino, director of the National Action Forum for Midlife and Older Women and author of Growing Older, Getting Better ( LJ 6/15/83), explores new housing options available to those approaching their later years who wish to pursue active, creative lifestyles. Because many older people are single, small group living schemes present attractive alternatives to traditional living arrangements, offering opportunities to pool resources and responsibilities as well as to establish new friendships. This book is by no means a comprehensive guide; it focuses on those without health impairments who have financial resources. However, its first-hand stories serve as a useful introduction to this topic. Recommended for general gerontology collections.
