Book Description

LIVING, LOVING AND LEARNING is a delightful collection of Dr. Buscaglia's informative and amusing lectures, which were delivered worldwide between 1970 and 1981. This inspirational treasure is for all those eager to accept the challenge of life and to profit from the wonder of love.

From the Publisher

I first received the hardcover in the summer of 1982 as a going-away present from a dear,
dear friend who knew how much I'd enjoyed Buscaglia's work, having read some of his earlier
books and seen his appearances on public television. It was quite the sentimental token to
take along as I embarked on what turned out to be a three-year adventure in Italy. A lot of
my first year there was very lonely, and Buscaglia's warm, soothing words were a comfort
to me in my most homesick times and gave me hope. More than merely a gift from a
good friend, the book itself became a friend that I could turn to again and again.

Weeks after returning to the States, in December 1985, I attended a performance of Lily
Tomlin's Broadway show, and during the intermission, I noticed a man who could only have
been Leo Buscaglia chatting animatedly with a woman a few rows ahead. My heart raced; my
mind debated. After all, wasn't he there to enjoy himself as much as I was? Yet I had to meet
the man whose work had touched me so. I mustered all my courage and approached him. "I'm
sorry to interrupt, but are you Leo Buscaglia?" He smiled warmly as he nodded. I blanked on
what to say next. Finally, thinking of what I considered to be his trademark, I blurted,
"Could I have a hug?" It was a magical moment. The man was so loving and genuine that I knew I'd done the right thing in going up to him--plus, it was the most heartfelt hug I've ever received in my life. That really cemented the book's meaning for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Insight on Relationship Development, Jun 30 2004

(REAL NAME)
"It's not the goal, it's the trip that's life: Life is the trip; life is the process; life is getting there," writes Leo Buscaglia. His intent in this book is to enhance the journey. The insights he offers are pretty well thought out. Among the things he discussses is our limited perception, noting, "we see only a small part of the things in our environment."

What a strong case he makes for reading! I was convinced before hearing him out on the matter. He reinforced my bias. Reading DOES expand you as a person. Growth means you constantly change and he spends time developing that theme. Buscaglia says we have an obligation to become all we can be, that we can't give what we don't possess, therefore in order to give ourselves, we need to cultivate what we have to offer.

Risk is part of living. He warns, "the person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, and becomes nothing." And on the significance of everything, he observes, "It's teeny little things that make the difference. Small things, side, by side, by side." He encourages you to seek other people who are fully alive to connect and help optimize your experiences. The only reason I didn't give this book a full five stars is because he is a Buddist. His savior is dead; mine's alive. A certain amount of error exists in the teachings of anyone unable to follow the logic of Truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Works to pass on..., April 26 2001

I agree with the reviewer who stated she has bought so many copies of this book. This is truly a book you do purchase for everybody, just like Leo passed on his works to us even after his death. This is a book everybody needs to have a copy of. The doctor who thought hugs cured all and really there is alot of truth to that one. I had somebody once tell me that people just don't touch each other enough...and that is true. This book will touch your heart and the heart of who you give it too. Don't pass this book up or you would regret it!

I WOULD LIKE FOR EVERYONE I KNOW TO HAVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK AND HOPE THAT SOMEDAY THEY PICK IT UP AND BEGIN THEIR JOURNEY NTO LOVE.
