5.0 out of 5 stars Good information about a devastating disease July 23 2009
By Dorothyanne Brown TOP 500 REVIEWER

I've just been diagnosed with MS; apparently I have had it for several years - and after many months with no flare-ups but just gradual progression of disability, I thought I could use some information about this less-widely discussed form of the disease.
Progressive MS doesn't qualify for the disease-modifying medications, is not often part of research projects, and is lesser known than the more common form of MS: Relapsing Remitting. It's unfortunate, given the large numbers of RRMS patients who eventually convert to Progressive MS.
This book is informative without being terrifying, clinical without being cold, reasonable without being destroying. It offers hope, in measured doses, and much good information. I was grateful to have read it, and it will remain on my shelf for ongoing reference. This and "Understanding the cognitive challenges of MS" BY NICOLAS LAROCCA. PHD, AND ROSALIND KALB, PHD, are the two books I think I will refer to most often as I wend through the challenges of life with MS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info on MS, really not so much on Progressive.... Feb 7 2009
By Paula Moore - Published on Amazon.com

Basic information on MS. I was disappointed that it didn't really cover more on Primary Progressive type of MS. Not a lot of info on that type of MS out anywhere. But the information in this book is good and I would suggest it for anyone looking for basic information on Multiple Sclerosis.

5.0 out of 5 stars These experts know their field Oct 1 2008

Please note: This review is for the second edition, which is called "Living with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: Overcoming the Challenges."

Thanks to Patricia Coyle, MD and June Halper for their work on behalf of us who have multiple sclerosis and have progressed in our disease course past the point where we could hope that new or worsening symptoms would lessen or disappear. The word "challenges" only begins to describe daily life.

There have been so many changes in the fight against multiple sclerosis in the last few years, including advances in genetic research and in the treatment of symptoms; it is a good time to revise the information on the subject, especially as the medical world has realized that a "wellness approach" is the right approach. Now we need to know how that looks in real life.

This book is well organized and labeled and includes a glossary, an index, and a list of suggested further reading. It is straightforward--no cartoons here. It is not meant to entertain, but to be a complete source of information, and it meets that challenge well. I have no reservations about recommending this book for your MS reference library.
