Product Description

It's not surprising that Living With Ghosts, the first Patty Griffin album, has all the immediacy and intimacy of a bunch of demos knocked up by a songwriter during those brief early moments when the songs are still vibrantly new and exciting, zipping around in her brain like atoms in a molecule that's about to tear itself apart. After all, a bunch of demos is exactly what it is. Recorded back in 1996, the rootsy young Bangor, Maine singer-songwriter used these minimal acoustic guitar and voice recordings to score a publishing contract but, fortunately for anybody who loves nothing better than a good song well sung, they were considered good enough to release in their raw state. Comparisons to Bruce Springsteen crop up in her press reviews, but she's really somewhere in between Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams, sparky and sincere, honest and uncomplicated. Although lacking the production values and country-rock band arrangements of her later albums, songs like "Let Him Fly" and "Every Little Bit" need nothing more than Griffin gives them here. --Johnny Black

4.0 out of 5 stars Really stunning Dec 18 2006
Format:Audio CD
Patty Griffin's perfect-for-folk voice, awesome guitar skills and beautiful lyrics really struck a chord with me. Her personality shines throughout this entire album and it screams with whispers; sparse production, simple arrangements and gritty poetry make this album a force to be reckoned with. It's surprising and sad that not many people have heard of Patty Griffin; if you haven't, you should. If you like country, folk, or acoustic your record collection is empty without the soothing down-home rootsy, raw sound of Griffin's piercing voice and truthful words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!!!! April 30 2004
Format:Audio CD
Spectacular debut album from an incredible talent. I had the privilege of seeing Patty on the Concert for a Landmine-Free World tour. Despite being on stage with stars like Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Bruce Cockburn, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty stole the show. I was completely unfamilair with her before the show, but I came away with 2 reasons to believe I had just heard something special --1) Earle had to follow her in the rotation, and at one point simply reacted to her song with a "yikes" and 2) my ex-wife hated her.

and that's also my favorite of her songs. I bought the CD after hearing a track on headphones at a music store. It turns out this was not the CD I had heard, so I was shocked by the raw, edgy solo performance, wasn't sure I liked it. Now I LOVE this CD. The lyrics are intelligent, poignant, and insightful and the melodies, the voice intonation, and the guitar licks match them perfectly. She is masterful. Sometimes it seems she can take my deepest, most hidden emotion and then yank it out and place it in front of me.
