Fractured and unfinished work by one of metal's greats,
By
This review is from: Lock Up the Wolves (Audio CD)
I read in a summer 1990 interview with Ronnie James Dio that he was unhappy with Dream Evil (one of my favourite Dio albums) because the songwriting was never complete. If that's indeed the case, then Lock of the Wolves comes as a total shock.Diohad completely revamped his band. The unpopular Claude Schnell (keyboards) was fired. Craig Goldy, Vinnie Appice, and Jimmy Bain all departed as Ronnie was no longer happy with their performances. In exchange, Ronnie took on a truly diverse crew: Swedish Jens Johansson on keys (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), new York kid Teddy Cook on bass, ex AC/DC skin pounder Simon Wright, and the young teenage Scot, Rowan Robertson as his new guitar wizard. The result was a band of skilled players, but lacking in chemistry. They'd never toured together at this point. Lock up the Wolves is a painfully s-l-o-w disc, with only a couple fast rockers to keep the blood pumping. The first track, "Wild One", fools you into thinking this album will be a rocking good time full of tasty guitar hooks and wicked Dio lyrics. However, "Born On The Sun", while boasting a great chorus melody, sags and droops lazily. "Hey Angel" and "Between Two Hearts" continue this pace. By this time, the listener realizes that Lock up the Wolves is loaded with boring pseudo-bluesy riffs, slow to the point of coma-inducing. The only slow tunes that really have spark of any kind are the monstrous title track (over 8 minutes of drama) and the ballady "My Eyes". "My Eyes" is my personal favourite track on the album, and perhaps worth the price of purchase if you can find the album cheap. The CD-only bonus track "Why Are They Watching Me" is the only other serious rocker on the album, and I have no idea why it was the CD-only bonus track, because the album desperately needed a kick in the pants. I do love the cover art. 2 stars.

My favorite CD by Dio,

This CD really ROCKS!!! Whatever others say, this guitarist (Rowan Robertson) is amazing, and it's a pity that he didn't appear anywhere else... All songs are going deep into the memory, especially the title track. And the wolf howl made by Rowan is just chilling! The tempo of all songs is different, so listening doesn't tiresome you and you can listen to the whole album "at one breath". Definitely the BEST album by Dio!

This album is slower than other work by Ronnie James Dio, but extremely well written, both musically and lyrically. I believe this to be some of the best Dio work. I love this album very, very much.
