The liner notes accompanying Sittin' in Again at Santa Barbara Bowl rank Kenny Loggins & Jimmy Messina among the great pop music duos of all time, including the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel. That's a serious stretch. Still, there's no denying that back in the day, Loggins & Messina were responsible for a fair share of memorable tunes and commercial hits--and judging from this 2005 concert, recorded nearly thirty years after the pair called it quits, their music has readily stood the test of time. They originally hooked up when Loggins, who was looking for a record deal, found both a producer and a partner in guitarist-singer Messina, a former member of the Buffalo Springfield and Poco; the hits ("Your Mama Don't Dance," "A Love Song," "Danny's Song,"" "House at Pooh Corner") started happening soon thereafter. It was Loggins, not the man he once called his "mentor," who enjoyed the more conspicuously successful solo career after they parted ways in 1976. But while none of his post-Loggins & Messina material is performed here, "Celebrate Me Home" would have been a natural, as this 20-song, two-hour concert has the feel of a joyous family reunion, with the pair's hometown audience very much part of the proceedings. Sure, everyone's hair is shorter and grayer these days (both frontmen were 57 at the time of this recording), and the vibe is a good deal more relaxed (for contrast, check out the breakneck, adrenaline-fueled versions of some of these same tunes from a 1973 appearance on TV's The Midnight Special). But that's precisely what this mellow night in a mellow town called for, and the Loggins & Messina band's country lilt, replete with fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic guitars, flows as freely as the breeze-blown clouds projected on the screen behind them. Clearly, a splendid time was had by all. ---Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Performance --- even Better sound !! Dec 27 2005
Format:DVD
As an original L&M fan, I naturally enjoyed the performance but I've got to mention that the sound mixing is absolutely one the best I've ever heard. Well most songs anyway. On a couple of tunes, with an upright bass, it was a little mushy on the bottom end. The rest of the concert is a master's work. Elliot Schiener doesn't play an instument but his 5.1 mix is astounding. Every musican's performance is covered with precision and clarity. His positioning on the 5.1 'sound field' probably makes it better than being there. It's startling !! Flip on your sub, set to Dolby 5.1, crank it up and you'll hear what I'm raving about. When the neighbours complain about the sound level, it's probably set about right. All concert DVDs should sound this good.

5.0 out of 5 stars It good to hear them again! Nov 20 2005

To see Loggins & Messina in the 70's and seeing the DVD of their

final leg of the tour ,brought back some fond memories. I was

hoping they would do this and what a great job they did! First,

of all, the musicians they used were impeckable! Each one played

multi instruments with finese and ease. The violin player ,which played about 5 other instruments sometimes stole the show. He was even playing some of the guitar parts on the tunes! As for what they looked liked, well lets just say its been some 30 years. Kenny is skinny as a rail,Messina has a big gut ,both looked to be very happy. They did some great songs that I was not expecting. Growin, from Mother Lode,Sailing in the Wind from Full Sail and of course our favs,Angry Eyes,Holiday Hotel,Your Mama dont Dance etc.. An over all excellent DVD. At the end, at the special "section" it gives you 4 excerpts of the 1970 show " The Midnight Special". They all looked good, but take note on how fast every tune was played. Yes, this is worth getting. They will not tour again, if you missed it,nor will they make another CD. They stated "we all have other projects to do". Get the CD also for the memories. It also pays fine tribute to the late great

sax man Jon Clarke who just passed away just recently. Go and buy it, you will smile listening to those great tunes of yesteryear..

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the native sons Nov 19 2005

You normally don't expect much from reunions of long defunct bands. The performances are usually by the numbers, the vocalists have lost a lot of range, etc., etc. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by this reunion, though. The backing band is entirely different from the original L & M band, but this group knows how to play these tunes, and adds some nice touches to the arrangements. Also, Kenny & Jim can still sing well.

A good selection of their catalog is played, no new material, but a well done cover of Buffalo Springfield's "Kind Woman" is performed. I've watched this dvd on 3 consecutive evenings, and enjoyed it more each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was a great concert! Oct 14 2005

I haven't seen the DVD yet, but I will pre-order it.

We attended this concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl and it was just perfect. Their energy and both of their voices were as good as ever. The song selection, visual backgrounds, and all the musicians were excellent and most of the songs sounded pretty much as you remember them. I was thrilled that they played "Be Free"; it sounded different live, yet the vocal was the same. A very satisfying concert in a beautiful setting.

If you are a Loggins and Messina fan, I think you will be very happy with this performance.
