Disturbing Film About 2 Repulsive Serial Killers, Dec 1 2010
This review is from: Lonely Hearts (DVD)
Not a bad film, Lonely Hearts delivers an interesting film loosely based on a pair of serial killers in the late '40's who hooked up with lonely women through advertisements to steal their money. As they progressed in their con, they begin to kill their victims with frightening consistency and cruelty.
As a period film, it does a good job of presenting the era it takes place in, and Leto and Hayek are very good as the serial killers. Nothing special about Travolta's performance, though it is solid and competent.
I suppose the problem I have with the film is that it is about two of the most repulsive serial killers imaginable, and as a consequence it is a fairly depressing movie to watch. Though it is somewhat satisfying to see these two inevitably get the electric chair, it does not remove the sadness the viewer experiences from viewing this film. It is probably due to the vulnerability of these lonely women, and how they become victims in the most cruel of ways. Also, the fact that a little girl is also brutally murdered ads to the depressive nature of the film.
It is difficult to describe this film as entertainment. It is more interesting as a docudrama looking at two serial killers during a certain period in American history. However, viewing the film can be an emotionally draining experience.
