5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Jan. 1 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lonely Planet's South Africa is a very thorough look at the history, people, landscapes and logistics of travel in the southern extreme of Africa. The maps are accurate, the food and lodging recommendations no more dated than one would expect, and the point to point itineraries and highlight listings provide a very useful tool for planning. Some LP guides (eg Central America)are worse than useless, others (Egypt) are indispensable. This one falls in the latter category.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative Jan. 18 2011
By Nomad - Published on Amazon.com

I ordered this book for my boyfriend who is talking about visiting Southern African in the future. When the book arrived a few days ago I was impressed as to how detailed & accurate the information was (I am South African and an African travel consultant so was objective & have experience in this subject). I was, however, slightly dissapointed by the lack of images. Pictures truly speak a thousand words and engage a reader so much more...giving them visuals of what to expect.

Overall, this book is great purchase for anyone wanting to plan a trip to sunny SA. For images, do a google.com search. There are heaps out there!

Happy travels! Africa awaits you!!!!

I am positively surprised by the level of detail and professionalism. A true companion to plan your visit well ahead and to avoid subsequent disappointments. Being now in the planning phase of my trip I just cannot wait to actually visit South Africa in March 2012 as the book brings everything to life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book On South Africa May 22 2012

I was looking for a travel book that had good section about Kruger National park and this one while having info on the whole country has limited value for just a single area such as Kruger. The book though is well written however the sections contain limited info. For example if you are looking for lodging you will find very few listed and this is the same for eating places. The book I found is more a summary that can be read very quickly. If you are looking for substantial detailed info on a particular area this book will have to be supplemented. There are a limited number of page maps in the copy I have but no country wide large map. That would have been handy.
