5.0 out of 5 stars best LP guide i've used, Mar 2 2004

This review is from: Lonely Planet Egypt 7th Ed.: 7th Edition (Paperback)
I have used several LP guides and this was the best one yet. I found the info to almost always be spot-on, and the writers of this edition present it to you with far more wit and humor than you would expect in a guide. I looked at a couple of the other reviews and noticed they were quite critical. This doesn't square with my experience at all. I spent 6 weeks in Egypt in spring 2003 and this guide was incredibly useful. Aside from the inevitable little mistake here and there, the only major inconsistency I found was that bus trips usually took about 20-30% longer than the guide estimated. that is, a 4 hour trip would usually take closer to 5. Other than that I had no complaints in 6 weeks of using this guide every single day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, Feb 13 2010
I lived in Alexandria for 3 months, and while the majority of this book focuses on Cairo, it was very useful. Cairo is massive and definitely needs to take up a large potion, and I have no problems with that. I liked the small portion on getting to Jordan by ferry as well. I found this book to be a very honest depiction of Egypt, from how locals act towards you, to the prices for things. The Alexandria section lead my friends and I to a few bars, and also gave us some information on poorly marked tourist sites (welcome to Egypt!). It has an AWESOME section on the Egyptian museum, which is probably one of the best and worst museums in the world, nearly impossible to navigate and find what you want to see, but this book as very helpful when it comes to that.

The maps were sometimes questionable, but I always found my way. The one thing I had trouble with was going to the visa office to get an extension... LP wasn't exactly clear on how to do it, but it seems like neither are the people who work there, so go figure.

There is also an awesome section on the red sea and diving, but I never got around to doing any of that.

Would 100% recommend this book, and also traveling to Egypt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for all the tips, April 26 2007

(REAL NAME)
Thank goodness I read this book before going to Egypt. I feel it really kept me from being ripped off left and right while I was in Egypt. I can't imagine anyone going there without knowing all the good tips contained in this book. The book though should make a bigger point about how to go about negotiating prices and what to really watch out for. For example, there are seemingly nice people who will approach you in markets or near tourist sites asking to show you around. BE CAREFUL! These people are most likely out to swindle you. I ran into one guy who wanted to show me papyrus at Said's Delta Papyrus Center. Little did I know that this guy was getting a big commission for taking me there if I had agreed to pay exorbitant prices for poor quality papyrus paintings. Be aware that all that so-called papyrus is mostly junk and made of banana leaves. The good stuff is never found in tourist areas - stay on the safe side and don't buy any unless it's a dollar or so just for a cheap souvenir. By all means don't plop down any real money (more than $10) for anything in the markets or souvenir shops. Also, what looks like gold is not, what looks like leather is not, what labels say and what store clerks say is usually not true, what the price they say is is 10 or 100 higher than the Egyptian price. It is best not to buy anything the first few days (or at all) until you are familiar with the real price of things. The book has lots of useful tips, but it should have more info about how not to be led by the nose by unscrupulous tour guides and people who approach you on the street offering help in good English. I have never been so lied to and deceived so much as in Egypt, and this book made a big difference in being even more fooled and cheated out of a lot of money. The tourist industry in Egypt has been at it for a long time and they have every trick up their sleeves, so read the book through and take the tips to heart. Good luck if you still want to visit Egypt.
