This review is from: New York City (Paperback)
I recently visited NYC for the first time. I took only three books about that city with me: this guide, the "Top 10 New York" guide, and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". I must say that the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" was not my favourite, though.

Truth to be told, this guide has a lot of useful information, and that proved helpful in some cases. What is more, it has some interesting planned walking tours that I liked, and good sections with data about the city and its history.

On the other hand, this guide doesn't have too many photos in color, and it includes some maps that are not specially good, particularly if you compare them with the spectacular maps of the "Top 10 New York" guide. Furthermore, it is big enough to be heavy, something that you will not appreciate if you have to carry it with you the whole day.

On the whole, I can say that I liked this guide, but I recommend it only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or another small guide like that, the kind of guide that you can carry with you while you leave the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" in your hotel room to check at night if needed. Enjoy your trip :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative!, Jan 9 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: New York City (Paperback)
I purchased this book along with the NY Times: Guide to New York City as a pair.

I haven't yet visited NYC, but I feel as though I've already been there by every thing I've learned from this book! There are sections dedicated to Sleeping arrangements, Walking tours in each of the five boroughs that make up the Big Apple, Shopping stops and much more.

The pictures are great too, however I wish there were more!

Because this book was written by locals, and they will write on how they feel about certain things of NYC, you don't have to worry about false advertising! I know which areas I would like to avoid, what restaurants to visit at what time of day, and when to visit the Empire State building. Very impressed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative but not the quality I hoped for, Mar 11 2011
This review is from: Lonely Planet New York City 7th Ed.: 7th Edition (Paperback)
I bought this book as well as "Fodor's New York City 2011" and I liked this one less. Lonely Planet has a good reputation but the book doesn't live up to it - the pages are made of newsprint (not glossy) and there are very few colour photos (they're all bunched into one section of the book). For this reason alone it's a less enjoyable read. However the information is still good, and I like it use it to compare between Fodor's to get the best consensus on what the best sights / eats / etc. are!
