Product Description

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Even the most avid readers of travel guides and travel literature will not have encountered a book quite like this one. It is huge and heavy but reasonably priced, and it is vastly informative, which is its calling card. All the writers who contribute to the Lonely Planet travel guide series have put heads, knowledge, and experience together and come up with an A-Z series of capsule profiles of every country in the world, 230 in number. Each country gets a two-page spread, on which are placed, like luscious dishes set before one at a feast, illustrations that are typical of Lonely Planet's unique, non-picture-postcard brand of shots. The accompanying text presents a cogent rundown of the best experiences for gaining the essence of the place; books to read beforehand; music to listen to before you go; food and drink to consume once you are there; and a few brief but pungent closing comments on the trademark things to do and buy and see and what, ultimately, is the best surprise awaiting the tourist. For borrowers in the travel section to sit down, look at, and make notes from, without taking off the premises. Brad Hooper

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, well worth the price, May 1 2005
This review is from: Lonely Planet The Travel Book 1st Ed.: An A-Z Journey through Every Country in the World, 1st Edition (Hardcover)
I ordered this book, expecting a few nice photographs and maybe an idea or two for my next adventure. What I got was a book with over 400 pages and at least 2400 gorgeous full-coulor pictures. Also included are reading and music reccomendations, specific to each country, maps, ideas for what to do once you are there, and tonnes more. I'm considering buying a few more for like-minded family and friends, as the value is incredible for this massive hard cover coffee-table type of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Dec 20 2005
By A Customer
This is a fantastic book.

First of all the pictures. WOW. The pictures are so colourful, so bright and typical LP, the people, the landscape. True quality photographs. There is one huge picture for each country then about 5 little ones.
If you like to travel at all you need this book. It is like a little tidbit to all countries of the world, plus dependencies like Anguilla. You get the population, area, map, little general info, surprises, essential experiences and more.
Plus all the information about each country is positive, and you get a look at the country if it was safe to go there. It is genius that you can sit at home and look at every country using one book. I want to travel everywhere and love geography, I am excited I can get to meet each country!
If you dream of traveling, or do travel this is a must book. I cant stop looking at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Travel Wish Book, Sep 13 2009
Absolutely spectacular photographs! This book is bigger than I expected, and it has more information than I could have hoped for. All the world's countries are presented in alphabetical order with maps, photos, and pertinent information. For each country, the book lists:
-Best time to visit (visit India in November - March when it's cooler)
-Essential experiences (watching King penguins at Volunteer Beach in the Falkland Islands)
-Getting under the skin (drinking Inka Kola, bubble-gum flavoured fizz in Peru)
-In a word (Yokwe yuk - love to you - traditional greeting in the Marshall Islands)
-Trademarks (shipwrecks in the Cayman Islands)
-Surprises (no traffic lights in Bhutan's capital, Thimphu)
This is a fabulous, attention-getting book. We have browsed through it several times, and it has made us want to visit places which we had previously never considered. It is definitely a Wish Book for travel.
