Two women have disappeared from Flaxborough. Neither seems to have been much in contact with friends and family immediately before their disappearance. Inspector Purbright is beginning to think something sinister is going on.
When the police go into the house belonging to Lillian Bannister - the latest disappearance - they are still baffled as there doesn't seem to be anything out of place. They half expect to find a body - but there's no trace of one. The only strange things are two letters from someone called Rex who appears to have been planning a future with the missing woman and a cheque stub which shows a payment made to a marriage bureau.
While Purbright and Sergeant Love are casting around trying to find any sort of lead into the case Lucilla Teatime arrives in Flaxborough and joins the marriage bureau. Is she exactly what she seems or does she have secrets to hide? This is not a conventional murder mystery but it is still an entertaining read with many amusing incidents and some marvellous characters - especially Lucilla.
Small town life is portrayed with all its faults and foibles and police work is hampered by suspects who are more intelligent than the average criminal. Purbright and Love make an excellent team and I find it refreshing to read about series characters who do not have overwhelming person problems to solve.
If you like your crime novels in the classic mould then give this series a try. It starts with Coffin Scarcely Used
