Some good moves, but Baron is too chatty.,
By
This review is from: Long & Lean Yoga: the Trainer' (DVD)
Baron leads a generally good yoga practice, but it is uneven. In general, the overwhelming problem is that his leadership is unorganized. He talks CONSTANTLY and while I like instructional help, he is usually just nattering and repeating himself (I roll my eyes when he talks about not "forcing your blossom to open" etc.). This means he makes you hold positions for longer on one side and shorter on the other--he does not pay attention to timing. He also seems to be winging it, since on several occasions his models cannot anticipate what he is going to ask them to do, and they obviously haven't planned how to/who will show the modifications. In general, as an intermediate yoga practicitioner, I found the DVD helpful at first, but I find myself becoming impatient with his constant chatter and his disorganization (like not holding positions equally on each side). I also really enjoy Karen Voight's yoga DVDs because they really open my hips and make me feel long and open all over; Baron does not, at least not in this DVD. I don't really feel a "total body" workout after doing this one. If you're a Baron Baptiste fan, my understanding is that is is slower than his others, and is in a studio rather than a jam-packed class as his other DVDs are, so you might like it a lot. But if you're just looking for solid yoga workouts, I'd suggest skipping this one and turning to Karen Voight's YogaSculpt or Yoga Power. After trying different instructors, I find Karen can't be beat. But even the 10 Minute Solutions is better and more well-rounded than Baron's Long and Lean workout.

SOLID, BUT FAMILIAR PRACTICE,
By J. S. WILLARD "eclectic reader" - Published on Amazon.com

If you own Baron's "soul of strength" or "journey into power" there's nothing really new here. Some poses are held longer, and there's more focus on upper body & core strength. this dvd seems more "western" not as much attention to going within, not much of a relaxation segment. I'll return to this from time because I really like Baron's style but it's at the bottom of my pile.

Long & Lean/Real & Reliable,
By Damon Zex "Filmmaker" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Long & Lean Yoga: the Trainer' (DVD)
For general maintenance there is absolutely no better power yoga DVD than Baron Baptiste's Long & Lean Yoga. The reason behind this claim I am making can be summed up in one word - timing. Before I became interested in yoga, I spent years at the gym lifting weights. After studying Ashtanga and purchasing a number of less balanced yoga tapes and DVD's, my introduction to this simple but physically challenging workout has made me feel stronger and look better than any other hatha program. I know it doesn't have every asana in the world and is a little heavy on the boat pose, but when I am done, I feel strong, alert, and ready to begin my day. I really enjoy Baron's added upper body workout, his sequence of primary standing, power poses, and his quick but efficient abdominal routine. Most importantly, something in the pacing of this sequence makes me breathe deep and sweat. I have memorized this routine and when I travel, this is the power yoga set I do.
