Product Description

It's 1939 when Hannah and Louie Adams wave goodbye to their mother and home in Holloway, leaving for the safety of the Hertfordshire countryside. The girls try to settle in with their new foster-parents, but the Bullocks are stern people, and when they send the homesick Louie to another family, the Beedles, Hannah is devastated. She decides there's only one way out - she must walk back to Blitz-torn Islington. Thirty-six hours later, a cold, weary and frightened girl arrives home to a shocking sight...

This review is from: A Long Way Home (Paperback)
It's 1939.Children and Mother's with young children are being evacuated to the safety of the country side. Sixteen year old Hannah, and her nine year old sister Louie, or Lou as she is referred to, are sent to live with Sidney, and his wife Margaret Bullock. The Bullocks are a rather strange couple. They insist on the girls calling them Mother and Father, even though the girls have parents. Their real Mother remains home in Islington to face the bombs and chaos, while their Father is away serving in the Army. The Bullocks own and operate a pub, and force Hannah to help out. Hannah soon finds out that the previous girl who worked there died under mysterious circumstances. Many interesting things happen while the girls are in the country. Hannah eventually can't take it anymore, so she walks some 20 miles home, only to find out what her Mom has really been up to while she and sister Lou have been away. But this is only the beginning. Hannah uncovers even more shocking secrets about her family. This was a fantastic book by Victor Pemberton! It is also very well researched. If you can, look for the book that has Just for You on the cover of it. Victor tells us what is was like for him when he was evacuated as a young boy. This is a must read for anyone interested in reading about the Second World War.

It's 1939. Children, and Mother's with young children are being evacuated to the safety of the countryside. Sixteen year old Hannah, and her nine year old sister Louie, or Lou as she is referred to, are sent to live with Sidney, and his wife Margaret Bullock. The Bullocks are a strange couple. They insist the girls call them Mother, and Father, even though they have a Mother and Father. Their real Mother Bab's Adams, is left behind at home to endure the bombings and chaos of the city; while their Father Len,is away serving in the army. Hannah despises the Bullocks, especially when they force her to work hours on end helping them out with the pub they own and operate. While working in the pub Hannah finds out that the Bullocks had another girl working for them around her own age, but she died under mysterious circumstances. Hannah runs away from the Bullocks and walks some twenty miles home. But when Hannah arrives home, she is shocked to see what her Mom has been up to while she and Lou have been away. Hannah finds out even more secrets about her parents. This book is a real page turner, and is also very well researched. It's a wonderful read for anyone interested in the Second World War. Well done Victor! Look on the cover of this book for Just for You, this has special extras inside for you to read. Victor tells of his own experience of being evacuated as a child during the war.
