Forget Breaking Bonaduce or The Surreal Life. Ewan McGregor has made a celebrity reality series that's entertaining without having to be called a guilty pleasure. Long Way Round is a documentary detailing the 20,000-mile motorcycle trip he took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman over 115 days. Their trip took them from London through locales such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, and Canada, to name a few, before ending in New York. Armed with a cameraman, McGregor and Boorman encounter separation anxiety from their families; a shifty stranger (later revealed to be Mafia) who leads them through winding dark corridors to a posh hotel room; delays at international borders; hosts who offer them Fear Factor-level animal parts for dinner; injuries, equipment breakdowns, and more. The pair also film their own video diaries, in which they voice concerns and frustrations. The result is an emotional, rich breadth of experiences, from the hardship of logistical setbacks paired with the joy of visiting the children of Chernobyl and encountering hospitable locals who insist on escorting them wherever they go. McGregor and Boorman also make witty emcees, cheerfully upbeat even when they wonder aloud if one of their gun-happy hosts is a psycho murderer. The journey concludes with their emotional ride into the Big Apple and some surprises for the pair courtesy of the show's producers. The DVD set also includes some can't miss deleted scenes. Long Way Round may have been an arduous once-in-a-lifetime experience, but you can't help but hope McGregor and Boorman suit up for another road trip someday. -- Ellen A. Kim.

Description

Departing from London on 14th April 2004 the pair travelled through Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada arriving in the USA just over 3 months later. Along the way the intrepid pair encountered Kalashnikov-toting gangsters and extreme cuisine, survived numerous motorised scrapes often whilst traversing non existent roads days from the nearest hospital and found themselves alarmingly close to a hungry grizzly bear. They arrived at their final destination, New York, on 29th July and this DVD release tells the story from the eyes of the two film stars.

Divided into the 10 one hour extended episodes including an entirely new episode 10, the triple DVD also features a number of extras including unseen and extended footage of the biking boys most memorable moments, photo gallery, extended post trip interview, interview with the series creators and additional information such as technical details of the bikes and itinerary required for a journey of this magnitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars answer some questions, Dec 27 2005

Since people are asking, this is the 10-episode version on three DVDs. It plays in US DVD players (region 1, NTSC) just fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great series, terrible disc manufacturing, April 21 2006

This review is from: Long Way Round: The Entire Series (Ten Episodes) (DVD)
This is a excellent series, following the adventures of the two intrepid explorers taking their BMW bikes around the world. There is great humour, and Ewan McGregor is on his best form since Trainspotting. So five plus stars for the content.

However, and this is a big however, we have now returned two sets due to persistent manufacturing faults. The later episodes on each disc freeze (mainly 3rd and 4th episodes) and skip, and eventually the disc just stops playing. We even had a totally new "Disc is dirty" error on the DVD player, in spite of the disc being spotless. Contacted Virgin Music Canada about this, but to date no reponse! Hence, zero stars for disc manufacturing quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Series on a 3 Star DVD mastering, Mar 20 2006

This review is from: Long Way Round: The Entire Series (Ten Episodes) (DVD)
This is a Fantastic series, and like one of the other reviewers said, I also wish I had been there. After I saw this on TVO I had to buy it, as it's well worth watching several times.

The only down side to this DVD is the poor mastering, and I'm really really sorry to give such a low rating (3) for what is otherwise an exceptional series. I had to return the 1st set as episodes 4, 5, and 6 skipped in their entirety - they were totally unwatchable. The replacement DVD still has problems; the last 15 minutes of episode 4 just skips (freeze frames the entire way). I'm hoping episodes 5 and 6 aren't like this. The sad thing is that these episodes are probably among the MOST interesting, other than the Road of Bones.

Maybe you'll be lucky and get a good set. If not send it back (just make sure it's within the 30 days return policy.) I had no trouble at all, Amazon sent me the replacement within 2 days of my email. Even with these problems, I'm still happy I bought this.
