Of all the hip-hop artists, in all the world, Afrika Bambaataa is perhaps the one with the biggest influence. He was one of the genre's creators back in the late 70s and he has worked ever since to help promote, maintain and spread the culture worldwide. Looking For the Perfect Beat spans an important five years of his career since it includes his seminal production moments such as "Funky Sensation", "Looking for the Perfect Beat" and "Planet Rock", the latter of which is one of the most influential records of all time, inspiring a whole host of genres including Miami Bass, Electro and early Techno. Elsewhere, the collection covers even earlier creations such as the hard to find "Zulu Nation Throwdown", a classic track despite some deeply dubious lyricism in places. Also featured is a selection of collaborations, such as "Frantic Situation" with Shango, "Unity" with James Brown (billed at the time as "The Godfather of Funk Meets the Godfather Of Hip Hop") and "Who Do You Think You're Funkin' With?" and "What Time Is It?" with Melle Mel. Voici l'acte de naissance de l'electro rap des 80's signé par un de ses pères fondateurs, les autres DJ new-yorkais à l'origine de ce son révolutionnaire étant Grandmaster Flash et Kool Herc. Si Kool Herc n'a pas enregistré bien que son nom figure dans tous les manuels comme une référence, l'hymne de Bambaataa, "Planet Rock", a fait le tour du monde. Son groove, alors totalement nouveau, il est allé le pêcher sur le "Trans Europ Express" du groupe allemand futuriste Kraftwerk. Rendons grâce au label Tommy Boy qui, pour fêter ses vingt ans d'existence, ressort cette bombe ainsi que quelques autres du même acabit dont On Fire & In Full Gear de Stetsasonic. En dehors de "Planet Rock", le reste du disque s'avère globalement funk (James Brown est samplé sur "Unit Part 1 (The Third Coming)" ; le classique "Renegade Of Funk" sera repris par Rage Against The Machine) à l'image de la papardelle d'invités dont deux des piliers du label britannique On U-Sound : Skip McDonald et Keith Leblanc. --Philippe Robert

Starts slow, but ends hot!,

To my taste, this CD is back-loaded with hits. The first couple of tracks are OK but the rapping doesn't reach the potential of the music. When it comes to the last few, however, "Who do you think you're funkin' with" being the best example, you may not be able to keep your jaw from dropping. I honestly do not think that these tracks (with the Sugar Hill Gang backing up) have ever been surpassed in the hip-hop genre. They are so dense and complicated and incredibly arranged.Disclaimer, however: I saw this band live in 1988 and it changed my life. I am so happy to have this album finally to refresh my memories of that amazing night.

This is an awesome cd every single song on this cd is great and I really do enjoy whenever you want to listen to some real hip-hop purchase this cd it contains the trademark hit"Planet Rock"I really do like this album it is a very nice cd to listen to I really do enjoy it every track on this cd is good I wonder why I only heard the planet rock song maybe I was too young to know what I was listening to but this is is a real treat and I would truly recommend any hip-hop fan to purchase this cd!!!!
