4.0 out of 5 stars Ease on Down the Road to Finding and Knowing Self, July 26 2007

This review is from: Looking for Self in All the Wrong Places: Based on the Wiz (Paperback)
Looking for Self in All the Wrong Places, by Gershonah Cynthia Whitley, is a unique and motivational read. Who would have ever thought that there were so many parallels to be learned about life from the movie, The Wiz? I certainly did not.

The author takes on points and messages in the movie and compares them to a person's life journey. Each flaw/issue that the characters' possessed in The Wiz, we as humans have probably dealt with, at some point, in our lives. For example, as Dorothy takes her journey, she comes across characters that are dealing with not feeling smart, not having a heart, a lack of courage, etc. Each one of these characters are focused on looking at the flaws and are looking on the outside to the Land of Oz for the cure and answer to these flaws--thus "Looking For Self in All the Wrong Place," instead of looking within and truly knowing "Self."

Whitley sums it all up with this quote, "We have to believe in our goals and ourselves not because someone else tells us, but because of an innate knowing."

This book was a delightful read. Not only did it offer insight from a personal and spiritual point of view, it was enjoyable and presented me with a very different perspective of a movie that I enjoyed as a youth. I like the way I was able to draw life lessons from a youthful memory. The song, "Ease on Down the Road," has a totally different meaning to me now. Gershonah Cynthia Whitley does a wonderful job of presenting the reader with how to embark on that journey of freedom.
