Book Description

July 21 2011
This lyrical story follows the life cycle of two loon chicks. We see them breaking out of their eggshells, then learning to swim, find food and avoid predators such as snapping turtles and big bass fish. After they learn to fly, they migrate to the ocean. And when their striking black-and-white feathers finally emerge, they fly inland, each to find a new lake territory and mate.

Susan Vande Griek’s poetic text is complemented by Karen Reczuch’s gorgeous illustrations, which show the loons as they grow from tiny downy chicks to majestic adult birds. An afterword is also included that supplies other interesting facts about the common loon as well as suggestions for further reading. Both the text and the illustrations have been carefully checked by an ornithologist for scientific accuracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOON, about a beautiful water birds family Nov 24 2012
By Alice Gould Butts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The illustrations in this book as well as the intimate story of a bird family in a beautiful setting, perhaps the coast of Maine, was so compelling when I read it in the children's library that I had to order it for my own family to enjoy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Illustrations of a Sweet Story May 29 2012
By Channah Abraham - Published on Amazon.com

The paintings of loon parents, loon chicks and the surroundings in which they live are so gorgeous I wanted to cut them out of the book to frame them. But that would have ruined my sister's birthday gift. She loves loons, so this book was a "no-brainer." Of course, I read it before I wrapped it. The story of the birth and early life of baby loons is as endearing as the paintings which illustrate it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Loons~! April 20 2012
By J. Stevens - Published on Amazon.com

This is a gorgeous book, full of lovely, richly detailed paintings and a wonderful, informative story. I suggest getting two of these books and storing one for your child to pass on to his or her own kids some day. Also, do not be surprised if you have a nearly impossible to ignore urge to tear the pictures out and frame them. Ok Ok, I admit, I'm a big fan of birds and science, but I think anyone would enjoy this book, and adults and children will learn something from it. fantastic!!!!!
