Treasury of tales of mythology, adventure and faith March 1 2014
By Enchanted Reader Girl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a wonderful collection of short stories about Lord Ganesha that contains diverse myths and legends depicting his role as the remover of obstacles and his legendary wit and wisdom.
The tales are characterized by the quintessential gods and goddesses, sages and demons, boons and curses of Indian mythology. They depict episodes ranging from Ganesha’s acquisition of an elephant head to his clever means of going around the world for a race, and from his curse on the moon to the serendipitous invention of a popular musical instrument.
There are references to the two great Indian epics in the chapters on Ganesha’s transcription of the Mahabharat (as Sage Vyasa narrated it) and his circumvention of the demon king Ravana from the Ramayan.
In addition, the collection is interspersed with folktales of devotees such as a little boy whose steadfast faith brought about a manifestation of the Lord and a little girl who wrapped up everything she wanted from life into a single boon.
Derived from various ancient Indian texts, the tales are retold in a simple and captivating style. The pages unfold like the scenes of a movie with vivid descriptions and entertaining dialogues. The beautiful illustrations add to the charm of the narrative.
To sum up, this is a lively, engaging rendition of classic stories about a magnificent and beloved form of God for readers of all ages!
