Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This memoir-cum-self-help guide by bestselling author Omartian (The Power of a Praying Wife and The Power of a Praying Parent) opens with an arresting scene: young Stormie's mother locks her in a small closet, telling her she'll "never amount to anything." Omartian reveals that after her troubled childhood, she experimented with drugs and Eastern philosophy and entered a disastrous marriage. Then she discovered God and began a journey toward emotional health. This book aims to tell readers how they too can find healing and wholeness in seven easy steps: release the past, obey God, obtain deliverance from whatever separates them from God, find restoration and forgiveness, receive the gifts God wants to give them, "avoid or get free of... negative traps," and "stand strong." Omartian encourages depressed Christians to seek counseling and urges patients to choose their counselors carefully. She cautions against blaming God for personal unhappiness. Interspersed are vignettes from Omartian's life, relevant Scripture verses and clear-cut, if overly simplistic, checklists to help readers know if they "need deliverance." (If they've hit a spouse, had premarital sex or dabbled in the occult, they do.) Little is original here except for Omartian's own story; more memorable approaches to healing can be found, for example, in books by Rita Bennett (You Can Be... Emotionally Free) and Leanne Payne (The Broken Image). (Jan.) Forecast: Omartian's self-revelatory books have been steady fixtures on evangelical bestseller lists as well as PW's monthly religion list. While the crowded nature of the recovery book market makes it unlikely that this title will achieve the same following, it will still be welcomed by her fans.

Book Description

When Stormie Omartian was a child, her mother would lock her in a closet and say, You are worthless, and youll never amount to anything. How did a young girl who grew up in an abusive home learn to overcome her past pain to find emotional wholeness as an adult? Lord, I Want to Be Whole offers seven steps that helped Stormie overcome clinical depression and live a more fulfilling life. She shows readers how prayer and the encouragement of Scripture can help them come to terms with their past. She also tells how to find deliverance from spiritual oppression and negative influences, learn to receive Gods gifts and believe the good things God says about us, become aware of deceptions and misconceptions, and maintain emotional health by taking care of our bodies and being sensitive to what is happening inside us. Lord, I Want to Be Who helps those who are troubled by depression find emotional wholeness and become all God made them to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stormie Omartian does it again!, April 14 2004

This review is from: Lord, I Want to Be Whole: The Power of Prayer and Scripture in Emotional Healing (Paperback)
I am not sure what possessed Ms. Omartian to start writing about the Christian walk and prayer, but I am so glad she did. There is a simplicity that makes the lessons she has to show us easy to understand, but there is insight there that will make you think, "Whoa! I never thought about it like that!" It is impossible for me, no matter what sort of day or week I am going through, to read through this book along with my Bible, and not feel immediately stronger, more uplifted and joyful. I have bought this book for friends and they always are quick to let me know that it is a wonderful counselor to turn to. Stormie lays out all the troubles we have with our attitudes, out emotions and activities and shows us how to give them over to God and rid ourselves of the baggage we carry. Things that are in our homes, like old books on the occult; attitudes of unforgiveness or resentment that we do not even know are there; problems with our mouth that we pass off as "just the way I am", are all addressed and then shown as the God dishonoring things they are. If you feel like cleaning out your spiritual closet, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pages full of God's Blessings, Aug 1 2003

This review is from: Lord, I Want to Be Whole: The Power of Prayer and Scripture in Emotional Healing (Paperback)
I joined this prayer group or more of a meeting for women who have some kinds of problems that needed to be healed through Prayer or just to open their hearts to see the gifts God has for them. One of the reading resources that was required was this book. I read it religously and found myself relating to Stormie's stories and following the steps I need to be whole. We need to realize that we have to let go of the strongholds that are not of GOd and give ourselves to him completely. I have now passed this book onto someone who I feel can see the benefits through me and I wish all of GOD's blessings on the women who will read this book and the people's lives they touch.

God Bless!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Book!, Aug 19 2002

This review is from: Lord, I Want to Be Whole: The Power of Prayer and Scripture in Emotional Healing (Paperback)
A friend recommended this book to me and was also kind enough to give me a copy. I had read one of Stormie's other books and liked it very much. I had seen this book in Christian bookstores, but never thought of purchasing it. But as soon as I read the back cover, I couldn't wait to read it. I can honestly say that this book has changed my life. It has helped me to get a more accurate view of both myself and God. One of the things I like best about this book is Stormie's transparency and honesty about her own struggles and failures. She tells it like it is and doesn't sugarcoat it. This book has given me hope that I too, can reach a place of emotional wholeness and restoration. Another thing that I really like about this book is that Stormie tells her readers upfront that she isn't offering a quick fix. She is very upfront about the fact that emotional wholeness is a process and that will can be a very long and painful process. But she also reminds the reader that with God all things are possible.I have read this book once already (in a single sitting) and intend to read it again and again, especially when I am feeling discouraged. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with emotional/spiritual issues and longs for wholeness and restoration.
