4.0 out of 5 stars A vamp who is also a shifter - love it!, Dec 24 2011
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lord of the Wolfyn (Mass Market Paperback)
I received this e-ARC for review from the publisher through NetGalley. I did not receive any compensation for my review, and the views expressed herein are my own.

This is the third book in the Royal House of Shadows Series, where each book is written by a different author. Andersen is a new-to-me-author.

This installment is Prince Dayn's story. As we find out from the first book, Lord of the Vampires, Elden is a city in an alternate universe. The Blood Sorcerer has slain King Aelfric and Queen Alvina. Before they succumbed to their deaths, they summoned their magical powers to cast each of their four children into different corners of the world. In addition to saving their children, they also instilled a drive for vengeance. Dayn's brother, Nikolai, is a vampire and his story was featured in the first book, Lord of the Vampires. His sister, Breena, has magical gifts and her story was featured in the second book, Lord of Rage. The series concludes with Micah's story in the fourth novel.

This book introduces a new wolfyn realm to the series. It can get a bit confusing because, in the beginning of the book, we switch between the human realm, the kingdom realm (where Elden is), and the wolfyn realm. You can enter the realms through swirling vortices.

Before the King dies, he "mindspeaks" (shared thoughts between blood-drinkers) with Dayn and tells him that the spell cast by the King and Queen was corrupted when it was cast due to the their injuries and also the Blood Sorcerer's strength. Although it did send the four children far out of the reach of the Blood Sorcerer to protect them, it has also tied the children to the castle and also to a deadly countdown. King Aelfric further advises Dayn that a woman will guide him back to Elden and that the countdown will begin when she arrives. If the children do not return to Elden to reclaim the castle and kill the Blood Sorcerer before the fourth night once the countdown has begun, they will all die.

Reda, an ex-cop from the human realm, feels compelled to remember a special book from her childhood that her late-mother told her would be given to her when the time was right. It was called Rutakoppchen, a version of Red Riding Hood in an ancient language wherein the wolf seduces the girl. Reda's mother died before she could give the book to her daughter, but destiny intervenes and Reda manages to track the book down through a magic shop.

When Reda gets her hands on the book, she remembers things that her mother had told her when she was a child that had long-since been forgotten such as how to access this alternate world. Reda finds herself transported to the wolfyn realm where she meets Dayn and the countdown begins.

I loved Reda! She is a strong woman but with a few chips on her shoulder. She blames herself for a fatal incident involving her partner that occurred while she was on the police force. I loved the romance between Reda and Dayn, but it felt very rushed. After all, the four-day countdown begins at Reda's arrival so there really is very little time for their relationship to develop and things happen very quickly. Nonetheless, the romance was hot and I love the idea of a vampire who is also a shapeshifter!

Dayn is pretty dreamy, much more of a romantic than his older brother, Nicolai. At the beginning of the book, we find that he is running away from the castle just as it is being attacked by the Blood Sorcerer (unbeknownst to him) and the reason why he is so upset is because his father does not want him to wed a commoner but a proper princess. Obediently, he ends the relationship with the poor girl even though it breaks his heart.

I am dying to find out how the siblings are all brought together and the battle with the Blood Sorcerer in the final installment, Lord of the Abyss!

MY RATING: 4 stars! It was really good!

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 out of 5, A short, fun read, Oct 15 2011
By Mother/Gamer/Writer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Lord of the Wolfyn (Mass Market Paperback)
This review is going to be a little different. My mind is all over the place on this book so I figure the best way to sum up my thoughts without spoilers is to list what I did and didn't like.

Likes:

A) I absolutely love the premise of the book. Imagine a kingdom being overrun and a king and queen who would do anything to save not only the people of the land but also their own children. Throw in some magic, sorcery, vampires, werewolves, unusual creatures and you have the makings of a fascinating tale. A+

B) Never having read any of Jessica Andersen other novels, I find her voice interesting, easy to read, not too intrusive, and overall very descriptive. The world-building in this book was outstanding. For the most part, I felt that I was in the Wolfyn realm with Reda. Experiencing her world spinning out of control as much as she did. The pacing was decent and there was plenty of action, never a dull moment unless we were in Reda's head over thinking.

C) The theme of "Little Red Riding Hood" fit well into the story. It was very believable and cleverly worked alongside the magical elements and other mystical creatures. It was a delightful twist on an old fairytale and readers should have fun discovering all the little twists and turns that Andersen takes.

D) Love scenes in Lord of the Wolfyn were fantastic. There were only a few, but in actuality with the threat against a kingdom that's all the book really needed. The few scenes we did get (check the shower), were delectable and oh so yummy.

Dislikes:

A) Well it was a very short read. I feel as though as soon as I started getting invested in the characters, oh about page 100 or so, I was finished with the book without really having known too much about either of them.

B) I would have loved more background on Reda's end. We get hints about her mother, a few hints about her father, a quick glimpse into her current life, and then we are transported to another world. I would like to more about a certain book that is often mentioned, more about her mother, and more about what she truly is. Maybe this was all explained in Book #1 or #2 in the series, and if so then my point here in null and void. If not I really think this would have added to the story and maybe given readers a little more insight to her character.

C) Another thing I didn't particularly like about Reda was her internal dialog for the first half of the book. At times she came off wimpy, whiney, indecisive, and unsure of herself and everything around her. I really didn't start liking Reda until she started to get some fire in her blood and speaking her mind. She was not a complete waste of space as a character, but as a main character she did fall kind of flat. I'm thinking that if we were given more back-story then this would not even be an issue.

Seeing as this review is short and to the point, I should express that having read the series out of order, I now wish I had started with the first book. In my mind there are still several unanswered questions and since the book was so short (under 300 pages), it's leaving me longing for more. Guess I will be picking up Lord of the Abyss (Royal House of Shadows, #4) to calm the rumbling in me to see how the saga concludes. Don't get me wrong, Lord of the Wolfyn can work as a standalone title but I must warn you once you get to the end you will want to know what happens in the final battle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Three Star for Dyan and Keely, Nov 4 2011
By Bukcrz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Lord of the Wolfyn (Mass Market Paperback)
Prince Dyan of Elden, the one (so far of the three mentioned siblings) with intact memory of the attack to his parents and kingdom, is sent to the Wolfyn land. He stayed and waited for the promised guide to lead him back to his family's kingdom for revenge against the blood sorcerer who killed their king and queen parents.
Here comes the promised guide Alfreda `Reda' Weston, a cop who just lost her partner in a shooting. She happened to had a mother who enchanted/brainwashed (depends on which side of the fence you are standing) her with tales of `Red Riding Hood' so when the same collectible book was found she bought it. Reading it she followed the voice inside her head's instruction and was magic-brought to where Dyan is.
They found each other, then like each other, they fought monster together, they kissed some more, fought some more monster and villains, and they have sex, and more monsters and they fell in love, and they are positioned for the incoming big battle which I guess will happened at the fourth book.
WARNING: Half of the book is spend by the author using the characters (the heroine particularly) about what's the `logical' things SHOULD be vs. what she is doing, feeling, or seeing.

Excerpt:
""You're right," she said softly. "I know you're right." She SHOULD put the book back..... She SHOULD take comfort in knowing...
But she turned the page, anyway,...."

That kind of storytelling is so distracting because instead of being immersed in the story, the author's attempt to tell the reader what to feel and what to think, just disrupt the flow. (It makes me wonder if she cannot find any other way to engage the reader's emotion other than just telling them.)
Anyway, with that kind of storytelling, she made the heroine sounded whiny and double-minded since she constantly goes on to her inner monologue and repeat facts mentioned on the first chapter to five or more chapters.
Reda is supposed to be a cop and a strong woman but every time she is faced with new revelations or challenges she turn away from Dyan to `run back home.'
Dyan, to the author's credit is a solid character. I like him.
This is one of the books that I only finished because I like the secondary characters better than one or two of the main characters. But if you are like me who wanted every penny to count I would check my local library first before buying this book, unless of course you're a fan of the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay book, Oct 15 2011
By Angie Drane - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Lord of the Wolfyn (Mass Market Paperback)
Having never read any books by Ms. Anderson I wasn't sure what to expect. While I found the concept of this book (and series) to be pretty interesting, I wasn't too impressed with it. I couldn't bring myself to really care about Reda or Dayn. Reda was busy over analyzing everything about the relationship she was going to give up in four days while still having tons of sex with Dayn. She also went from a freezing-in-place coward to being a kick ass warrior woman in one chapter. Dayn, on the other hand, went from total alpha male to having to be rescued twice. I'm also still confused about the difference in the time span between each book.
