5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Stuff, Mar 18 2011
By D. Moore - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: LOSS (GUS DURY 3) (Hardcover)
Gus Dury is back with his wife, Debs, although their relationship is fragile. Also fragile is Gus' new-found sobriety. Relationship and sobriety are both threatened when Gus' brother is murdered and Gus, needless to say, resists all exhortations to leave the investigation to the police. His own attempts to find his brother's killer put him on the wrong side of just about everybody - the law, Debs, and some seriously dangerous men. Sometimes it seems as though Gus' only friends are his dog, Usual, and the unopened quarter bottle of whisky Gus keeps in his pocket. Luckily for Gus, he does have two good friends who step in and help him, without thought for their own safety. As Gus struggles to come to terms with the loss of his brother, things get darker and more dangerous. Wonderfully written, tough, edgy, and very dark, but with the odd flash of humour, LOSS made me cry at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best voice in Scottish Crime Fiction out there...A+, Jan 28 2011
By Lavourbelle - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: LOSS (GUS DURY 3) (Hardcover)
I read it from cover to cover in a day...this is a gripping emotional rollercoaster and by far the best in the Gus Drury Series. In brief - Gus investigates the murder of his brother Michael, the family success story against the backdrop of recession-torn Edinburgh. Chasing criminal kingpins and their illegal scamming ways while he battles the bottle and struggles to keep Debs in his life - it never gives up on the surprises.
I think what really did it for me is that the author channels the emotional devestation of grief so well into Gus that we can really see what a complex and misunderstood man he is...a ruthless but sensitive trailblazer who searches for answers in a fairytale city with a very dark soul. It reminds me of Raymond Chadlers 'The Big Sleep' in that way...decay and badness everywhere despite its shiny surface. Yes there were times when I wanted to slap him but I gave him a chance, held my breath and it paid off. The ending is fantastic...I never seen it coming.

Given that so much crime fiction these days is lacking in originality, I really think Tony Black is the best thing to come out of Scotland since Irvine Welsh...the grit is there, the dark tales are there and the hopelessness of living at all shines through as Gus struggles on with the odds stacked high against him. Brilliant, such a great voice.
