4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as Good as David Weber, Feb 16 2010

(REAL NAME)
I've just finished reading the first five (5) books in the "Lost Fleet" series written by Jack Campbell. It really is in the tradition of Patrick O'Brien (Master and Commander) and David Weber. The character development in the "Honour Harrington" novels by David Weber grips me more but the space battles, strategies and plot outline in the Jack Campbell books are great fun and are well done. While sex and violence are touched on, they are done delicately and with good taste as opposed to some novels which dwell on gore and lust to sell them at the expense of good prose, plot and character development. There does not appear to be any political agenda to push that some other authors sometimes get bogged down in. So the novels are heartily recommended.

This review is from: Valiant (Paperback)
Earth is at war with the Syndic. Who are human just like you and me but take an entirely different perspective on what is right and wrong. What's right is anything that financially or politically benefits them. What's wrong is everything else.

What started this war that has been going on for 100 years ? No one seems to remember but the important thing is to destroy the other guy. And that's the premise for the entire series of 6 books, recently expanded to 7 although on a different story arc with the same characters in this series.

Things get really sideways in this volume as Admiral Geary's decision to take the fleet back to the scene of their worst defeat, the Lukota system, has many Captains questioning what the Admiral is up to. Disobedience and contrary actions during battle are creating untenable conditions for Admiral Geary.

But Admiral Geary knows it's the right decision, or is it ? It will certainly surprise the Syndic Fleet which is now spread throughout Syndic space trying to catch the Earth fleet .

Admiral Geary proceeds with his plan to the advantage of Earth's fleet

This a great military science fiction series with well developed characters and space battle strategies

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet another solid entry., July 31 2008

The more I read these Lst fleet books, the more I'm convinced that they should have been released as a triology. I've talked about this ad-nauseum on previous reviews...but I'll talk about what is new.

This book takes on a new twist. Now that Geary is all but home-free the enemies within the fleet are massing against him and are taking serious physical attempts at his life. His personal life is also getting more complicated in a very interesting way. In this novel you get a real sense that although the fleet is still fighting, that things are getting more and more serious. Things are becoming more and more critical and the ships are starting to need more and more to keep them going.

According everything I've read the plans are for 6 books in this series, and the last two books are really starting to take shape. These book could use a few hundred pages more to flesh them out. But to me that's a sign of a good book...that you wish that there was more.
