Product Description

While Lost in Space may never enter the pantheon of great television programming, the 1960s sci-fi show certainly has its charms, all of them in evidence on this first volume of episodes from the second season. Produced by Irwin Allen, who would later be responsible for blockbuster disaster films like The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure, these 16 episodes from 1966-67 (spread out over four DVDs) find the show undergoing some changes, both technically (from black & white into color) and in terms of tone (more campy and tongue-in-cheek, especially as the season goes on). The latter is due in large part to the performance of Jonathan Harris as Dr. Zachary Smith, who puts the "arch" in archvillain (it was his meddling that got them all lost in the first place). Harris's portrayal of Smith as cowardly, duplicitous, pompous, and not a little fey often goes right over the top, but the other characters (including Guy Williams as Prof. John Robinson, June Lockhart as his wife Maureen, and young Bill Mumy as Will) are so bland and generic that Harris, the family robot, and guest stars like Strother Martin and Wally Cox offer the only available relief.

The Lost in Space storylines are predictable (almost always involving some alien-related jeopardy prompted by Smith's greed and foolishness) and the special effects and production values won't excite anyone used to the wonders of the digital age. Still, this is television, where budgets are smaller and schedules much tighter, so lowered expectations are in order anyway. Some users may feel shortchanged by the absence of extra features, or by the fact that the set doesn't include the entire season (the second part is available separately). But the transfers are good and the DVD menus easily navigable. But on the whole Lost in Space devotees--and there are many of them--should be well satisfied. --Sam Graham

4.0 out of 5 stars LIS moves into the 2nd season! June 27 2014
By Robert Badgley TOP 100 REVIEWER

This is the start of Season two of Lost in Space, the first 16 eps.It is the /66-67 season and it is in colour, as many of their competitors were doing the same.It didn't matter to most folks,as they didn't have colour sets. For one they were too expensive, and two the colour back in those days was a gooey looking mixture of greens and reds.Nothing like the clarity of sets today.I never owned a colour set until the later 70s,so I never ever saw these in their original form...until now.
This season finds the robot becoming more and more human like.He laughs at and jibs Dr.Smith, while also getting his "feelings" hurt very easily.Jonathan Harris has become the virtual star of the show. His masterful portrayal of the deceitful doctor has earned him a central place in each story. We also see a loving and tightly bonded family.Very understanding and the type of parents you would want as a kid yourself.
The story line has the family being forced to flee the planet they were on in the first season, only to have to land on one very similar to the first. We see the appearance of such guest stars as lovely Vitina Marcus who plays the" green woman" in two eps,Wally Cox,Malachi Throne,Henry Jones,Allen Melvin and Hans Conried.
And as usual the eps all use that old chestnut, the cliffhangar.Just about as old as movies themselves, this technique has the eps playing out their story and including an exciting moment from next weeks ep at the end. They freeze the picture at that moment and tell us to tune in next week at the same time. The show Batman, also filmed on the same lot, utilized this tool and took it a step further, using its famous encouragement at the end to be here next week: "same bat-time,same bat-channel".

4.0 out of 5 stars Great deal on the Classic LIS series Jan. 1 2014

Classic old LIS Series from my childhood with features in colour. Kind of corny but entertaining and how they perceived the future in the 60's.

Well, received LIS, Season2, V1 today.
Box, very nice artwork.
CD covers, very nice artwork.
To start with, I agree the previous reviewer, that the colors are vibrant. The resulting picture is pretty clear.
The only problem, AGAIN, is that, like the 1st season, you can see the Interlace lines in the picture. That would suggest that the "digital" copy was made, possibly, via an older Telecine machine. There are systems that can copy film, frame-by-frame, which results in the clearest, interlace-free pictures possible. Clearly, this was not used here.
I make copies of old film at home with my NLE studio and do not get Interlace lines at all. Unfortunately, I won't spend the money for frame-by-frame..... [cheap! ;) ]
So, I am disappointed with the lines, especially when viewed on our HDTV, which has Progressive Scan. For those not familiar, Progressive Scan doesn't interlace the lines on the screen like you would normally see on a "regular" TV set. On an interlaced TV, the larger the screen, the more pronounced the lines.
That being said, it would have been nice for Fox to use better technology (frame-by-frame) to transfer film to digital, in order to not have the interlaced lines.
As clear as the picture is, when viewed on a larger screen, HDTV, the lines are very noticable.... it's like watching a TV without Progressive Scan.
Still, it's better than NOT having the collection at all! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It! July 9 2004
By A Customer
I purchased the Complete First Season and plan to buy Season 2 and Season 3 when they are released. I grew up watching Lost In Space (didn't miss an episode) and was thrilled to discover that the First Season was available and passed the word along to my brother who also purchased it. My favorite characters were Don, Judy and Dr. Smith. The interaction and 'no love lost' between Don West and Dr. Smith was and still hillarious!

3.0 out of 5 stars one plus one = one July 5 2004
By A Customer
Would have probably rated it a 5 if it was a single box set.
I would rather wait for a single 8-disk set rather than split up a season. What are they thinking? This is not a good precedent to be setting. IF the first season was issued as a vol 1/vol 2 set, then I wouldn't have a problem but since the entire season was bundled then they should continue this way. Like I said, what are they thinking?
