Interesting idea killed by crappy execution, Jun 16 2010

I found out about this looking for more information on the 2002 pilot and after reading the first few chapters I could only think 'boy this is horrid'. My first clue things might be a disaster was you have no real background to any of the characters, nor any reason for for them to be OZ, and worse the deus ex machina of one of them conveniently having Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" with them that shows up in the first chapter.
Ok, rocky start I think, maybe it gets better--problem is it got WORSE. Rather than kicking around why this HAS to Baum's version of the story the characters argue about trifles with one of them stating the silver shoe are the ONLY way out of OZ ignoring the point of the BALLOON the Wizard used. Then you get to the end of chapter two and things continue to go downhill as the main character decides that instead of following the one story they have of the place it is a much BETTER idea to stumble around a place he admits to knowing next to nothing about. Then after their book goes blank (I guess if they had one of the many noncanonal adaptations like "Wicked" they'd still have a clue) they decide to go the Scooby Doo route and split up as if the first idea by the main character wasn't dumb enough. At which point the reader puts his head in his arms and cries.
This had so much potential but totally blew it by having a bunch of clueless as well as dumb characters do things that are outright stupid even by bad slasher film standards. To parphaze Yahtzee there is so much incompetence and outright idiocy on display it is like someone took a bunch of clueless dweebs from a Z-grade horror flick, tied them up in front of a 24-hour Barney marathon, and then brutally hit them upside the head with a baseball bat made of frozen stupid.
From what I understand the second novel drags Wonderland into this mess (right, like "those" go together) and kills off one of the main characters (insert your own too stupid to live joke here) but I doubt that most people will make it through the first book.
