Books that present characters with disabilities often rely on stereotype and drip with pity ... The Lottery rises above the commonplace with a tender story about a fellow with a disability that is frustratingly real. This book looks at the thorny issues of 'family' and 'trust' and places us in the middle of a story with realistic people facing difficult decisions. There is much to learn from this book. Gram's rules for survival are brilliant. Anyone can enjoy this book but if you work with, or care about people with intellectual disabilities - this book should go at the top of your reading list. My agency has just selected it for our book club, can't think of a better choice.

I listened to this book on cd. Paul Michael does a wonderful job as telling the story from Perry L Crandall's perspective. The above reviews showcase what the story is about. What I liked about this book is that it shows in a small way the prejudice that people with an IQ of 76 go through and does this with a sense of humour. We discover that Perry isn't challenged in the ways that count. Like the other reviewer, I was sad when it was the last cd. Patricia Wood has a very good first book.

Such a delightful novel! I suspect that many of us could learn a lot from Perry L. Crandall and his Gram.Perry's world is an interesting blend of keen observation, acquired learning and intuitive feeling. He may not always know why something is happening but he is able to make a form of sense of it quicker than many others can. Perry, or Per to his best friends, is able to work out what is right for him even if some of his logic is foreign to others. I enjoyed this novel: I like where it finished and the neat sense of hope for the future, despite some sad aspects to the journey. Sentimental? Sure it is. That's what makes this novel come alive. Ms Wood has delivered an unlikely but likeable hero, some well-developed secondary characters and some despicable villains. Perry may be an auditor, but he is also a contributor.
