there are certain things that just are not good in and of themselves. these things need to be redeemed by context or content,preferably both, in order to appear as valuable. Things like, funk, politics, profanity. these are fine embroidery on an otherwise quality product, but if they are bearing the load then all you have is vapid flourish. not that i object to vapid flourish, i dig little richard (not suggesting that i find little richard overly political), but at least give it a good tune.

!!! are worthy standard bearers for the current marketing crosshair trained on 20-35 year old america, empty headed hipsterism. if you take this album into the gap, on your new i-pod, you can feel above your fellow shoppers, but also firmly "with them". gaining their respect but not alienating them.

suggestions:
if you want funk redeemed by tune and a refusal to take anything seriously, get franz ferdinand. you'd still be cool and edgy in a "i found my music in the discovery bin at target" sort of way.

if you want funk and politics redeemed by attitude, tune and a bit more lyrical meat, then get radio 4. you will be cool, edgy and political in a "border's recomends this cd" sort of way.

if you buy !!!, you may convince people that you are both edgy and cool, ultimately though the egg will be squarely on your face, beacuse it just isn't good. its funk is repetetive (not a surprise) and un-memorable (big mistake for something that plans to be repetetive). the politics are merely petulant. they drop names and then call them jerks before letting loose a string of curse words in three different languages. (if the music thing dosent work out the guys of !!! could always try cable news)

this cd is highly forgettable and will find an audience for two reasons:
1. drugs. i am sure, through the proper chemical filter, this cd is mind blowing. but then again so is the tele-tubbies, when you're blitzed.
2. the "new" premuim on hip. along with buying this cd; buy enough brand new vintage t-shirts, stir the right ammount of ghetto influence in with your wasp sensibilities, be sure not to spend time cultivating content in anything you do, and be sure to watch lots of the right TV; you'll be so hip you wont be able to see over your own pelvis.

I saw these guys in NYC in October 2002. It was an exciting show. Almost two years later finally they have put out an album. Like Radio 4, !!! have to be seen and heard. This record fulfills the promise. It's okay to do drugs too.

Ok, I do agree with some of the criticism of this album: yes, the lyrics are inane, yes, some beats can be repetitive, and yes, !!! is not wholly original (what band is?) But, Louden Up Now is a highly satisfying listen. I first got hooked w/ the "Giuliani" EP like a lot of other folks, but I am not disappointed at all w/ this release. !!! has created its own genre of alternative rock dance music. Each song is organic, layered, and instrumentally diverse, evoking nostalgia for disco, punk, and new wave bands of the 70s and 80s. (Note: I have never seen !!! live, and I still can't stop listening to this CD!!!!!)
