From the Back Cover

Night or day, it’s always high time to fall in love with New York Times bestselling author

LISA KLEYPAS

She harbors a secret yearning.

As a lover of animals and nature, Beatrix Hathaway has always been more comfortable outdoors than in the ballroom. Even though she participated in the London season in the past, the classic beauty and free-spirited Beatrix has never been swept away or seriously courted…and she has resigned herself to the fate of never finding love. Has the time come for the most unconventional of the Hathaway sisters to settle for an ordinary man—just to avoid spinsterhood?

He is a world-weary cynic.

Captain Christopher Phelan is a handsome, daring soldier who plans to marry Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious flirt Prudence Mercer, when he returns from fighting abroad. But, as he explains in his letters to Pru, life on the battlefield has darkened his soul—and it’s becoming clear that Christopher won’t come back as the same man. When Beatrix learns of Pru’s disappointment, she decides to help by concocting Pru’s letters to Christopher for her. Soon the correspondence between Beatrix and Christopher develops into something fulfilling and deep…and when Christopher comes home, he’s determined to claim the woman he loves. What began as Beatrix’s innocent deception has resulted in the agony of unfulfilled love—and a passion that can’t be denied…

“Will leave you breathless.”—Romantic Times BOOKreviews

Was the plot terribly intricate? No. However, I have to say even though it was a rather quick read, I really liked it. From the beginning, when Beatrix was introduced, I thought her story would have to be a delicate love story, because she is unique for her times, especially in the way she loves and cares for wounded animals. A bit over a hundred years later she would have been a successful veterinarian given her passion for animals and all things nature. However, in her times, the mid-19th century, she was very much constrained by a close minded society which didn't value a woman's contribution to society. I thought Kleypas treaded right with her character in giving her a romance that unfolded, not love at first sight, but love at first read. I thought having Beatrix's love interest be a person who was very damaged by his war experiences was a great idea, because Beatrix is by nature a nurturer and very sensitive and she would be sensitive to the needs of a person suffering from what we now know as PTSS. I thought the letters were beautifully written, and I can see how a passion developed over the course of the letter writing friendship that found its ground once they saw each other again. Is it Kleypas' best work? No, that would be Devil in Winter. However, I think this is a good book and a nice summer read.

I enjoyed all 5 of the Hathaway books though admit that the final 3 were more enjoyable to me than the first two.

This one had such a great premise I was ready to fall in love with it even before I bought it.

I loved the romance letters in the first section and the funny moments. It's not my favourite Kleypas book, but it's a good one.

Although not my absolute favourite LK book, Love In The Afternoon is still worth the read. LK is on my auto-buy list because she always delivers. Make yourself a cup of tea, put your legs up, and sit down to an enjoyable and entertaining read.

I absolutely LOVE this series. The characters are so well written, you feel you know them personally. Each book is a delight in itself, and together they tell the story of an unusual family for their time. Free thinking women, and men who are able to cope with that. This is my very favourite, but I recommend all and any books by Lisa Kleypas. She has never let me down yet!
